Anyone know of good dairy substitutes and any side effects from eliminating dairy in diet?!

Question: I am interested in possibly going dairy-free in my diet. I already am a vegetarian. Can anyone tell me some good substitutes for some of the items I might "miss". I already drink rice milk, soy yogurt, etc. but some of the less common things like parmesan cheese (or cheeses in general). Any brands that you prefer? Also, does anyone have experience with cutting dairy out of their diet and were there any side effects (both good and bad)? And, one last question - those that don't eat dairy, are there times when you will ocassionally eat dairy (in small amounts) and does that effect you at all, or what % of your diet might contain dairy? (example - am thinking of cutting it out wherever possible, but know that there may be times I will eat it - any effects?)

First week without dairy- I felt more energy. I've slipped up before and I've gotten a little sick from it but nothing insane. When you're so long without dairy your body almost builds up an immunity to it (like lactose intolerance) so all your really threatened with is diarrhea.

There are vegan cheese for almost any kid. Are they all good? Not at all. Are they all good for you? Nope, not really. Most of it is highly processed, which might create the taste, but it's not exactly healthy. I find "Follow Your Heart" vegan cheeses to melt best. In the vegan restaurant I work in we use tofutti for sanwhiches (we usually get it to sort of melt by grilling or putting it in the over), we use a nutritional yeast blend (that might be your healthiest choice) for a mac and cheese and a different variation of that for nachos, and we use Veggie Cas (it's a bulk vegan cheese for restaurants) for
quesadillas. Some of that has things you want to avoid- like hydrogenated oils and high fat and processed soy crap.
Oh and the brand "shreese" though natural is so gross.
I've been vegan for 5 years, and I like vegan cheese so understand that when I say it's gross it's not from the perspective of a person who loves their fresh italian mozzarella.

SO basically- start out substituting and then sort of move on. Once you're not dying for cheese you might not be dying for fake cheese, ya know?
There are plenty of amazing meals without any sort of cheese.

And dairy is not something your body is really designed to consume to begin with. We are the only species to drink another animals milk... But regardless of that the decision is entirely personal depending on you own wants, tastes, needs, ideas, and body.

And as for milk: soy, rice, and hemp are good. You can use them to replace milk in virtually anything.

Good luck!

let's look at DAIRY......products of cows milk....would you eat products of dog, cat, pig or human milk? What makes cows so special other that they are stupid enough to let us milk them? try ice cold squirrel milk and cookies....

If you're already using rice and soy, you pretty much have it down. Tofutti makes "better than cream cheese" and "better than sour cream" and "sour supreme." There are non-dairy desserts (temptation mint chocolate chip, anyone? *drool*)

Side effects: Clearer skin, less congestion, fewer skin issues (eczema, psoriasis, etc.,) more regular bathroom habits, happier cows.... etc ;)

Anytime I would go back to dairy, I'd break out worse than I did prior to stopping, i'd feel all mucusy in my throat, my stomach would get queasy, and so on.

Some great sites are: milksucks.com and notmilk.com

Not to mention, it's breastmilk for baby cows. They don't naturally produce it. They only lactate after having a baby, like humans do.

Well you have one side effect ... you start thinking like "hanspeter". That's should turn you off immediately ... but if it doesn't ....

Cheese's in general are excellent sources of protein as well as being delicious. Vegan cheese are absolute "crap." Eat moderately and well balanced meals . . . your energy needs to be directed in other directions that will benefit you and humankind rather than focussed on foraging for the "right" food ... that's just obsessive and compulsive in my opinion.

Substitutes: Rice and soy products are the two main and popular substitutes.

Side effects: Death.

Ive been allergic to dairy for quite a while and havent eaten it or taken anything for it.

Honestly a glass of milk has plenty of saturated fat which we have no dietary requirement for and heaps of protein, which the body will use up excessive amounts of calcium to excrete, negating some or all of what amount of badly bio-available calcium would actually be absorbed from the milk.

id rather a glass of water for the water, some nuts for protein and some leafy green veg for the calcium thanks!

Good Luck : )

There shouldn't be any side effects from no diary. Most Asian people don't consume diary and they don't suffer from lack thereof.
