1 - I did it for my health, the health of the planet and to minimize exploitation of animals. You could say that I could no longer come up with a good reason to eat animals.

2 - I'm recently vegan after 20 years as a lacto-ovo-vegetarian.

3 - Do some reading. "Diet for a New America" and "The Food Revolution" by John Robbins, "Mad Cowboy" and "No More Bull" by Howard Lyman, and "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell are all informative and interesting. I was raised on meat, too, but never really had a craving for it after I gave it up. If you do, try out some faux meats (you can even have a vegetarian chili cheeseburger if you really want to!)

4 - For the most part, my friends and family didn't tease me about it. One of my girlfriends said she thought it was stupid and it wouldn't last, but she shut up about it after that. When I met my (now ex-) husband, he confessed that he almost didn't call me when he found out I was veg because he didn't know any vegetarians and thought I might be some kind of weird hippie type but that he was glad he did because he found out I was pretty normal. That was really all I ever heard about it. Since you're not so lucky, I'd just tell your friends firmly that it's your choice, that you plan on sticking to it and that you'd like them to at least respect it even if they don't agree with it. If you lay it out, they'll likely back off.

The recipes are all vegan, but they're awesome and it's not like a vegetarian has to have eggs and dairy at every meal. Her cookbooks "Vegan With a Vengeance" and "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World" are really good, too.

6 - You don't have to eat tofu. There are a lot of other soy-based meat-like foods you could try instead (like tvp.) But you might want to give tofu a fair shot; prepared well it's pretty good. The link I gave has a recipe for scrambled tofu that rocks. The secret is to press all the water out of it before cooking it so it's not mushy and soaks up all the spices (put the block of tofu between layers of paper towel and stack a couple of hardcover books on top for half an hour to an hour. It really makes a difference.) But, you can get your protein from a million other sources if you decide tofu's not for you, so no worries. It's not a requirement of vegetarianism!

1. health and minimize suffering for the animals. Spiritual vows, too. Also, many of my heroes were vegetarian: my first martial arts instructor, some famous people (Dick Gregory) and great thinkers...the list is long.

2. Only animal products I eat are milk and cheese. The cow gives these without suffering/dying.

3. It took a long time to loose the taste for meat. The trick is to stay motivated. Review why you started. Consider the reduction of suffering in the world... eventually, i lost the craving for meat. Later, it stunk.

4. Find new friends. That was hard. I grew up in Chicago of all places...the slaughterhouse capitol of the world. I was also unpopular in Texas. Guess what: my convictions were stronger than the pathetic opinions of people, who generally live in ignorance until they die, then continue to suffer somewhere. Very sad.

5. sorry... but an an online search for "vegetarian recipes" should turn up about a million hits.

6. Tofu is very bland, flavorless. But thanx to that, it mixes well with almost anything. The Japanese have great recipes for cooking it into things. But yea, I wouldn't just spoon the stuff into my mouth. Blech! :-)

1. Mainly for the animals, but also for better personal health & the health of the planet.
2. Lacto-Vegetarian. I use some dairy occasionally but no animals (including fish & other sea creatures), no gelatine, rennet or lard. I try to avoid eggs but if I'm @ someone's home & they offer me a slice of birthday cake I usually eat it even though it has eggs.
3. I was raised on meat too & used to enjoy chicken & sea creatures especially, but basically whenever I think about what they really *are* I'm no longer tempted.
4. Ignore them. Most of them quit teasing sooner or later & even ask intelligent questions. I eventually realized that, with the few ppl who never stopped criticising, it was *their* problem, not mine.
5. vegweb.com
vegkitchen.com
healthy-eating.com (this one has lots of cookbooks & vegetarian foods & supplements)
6. You don't have to eat tofu & there are lots of vegetarians who don't. I have it once in awhile, usually either sliced into a spicy stir-fry or blended into a fruit smoothie. You can get more than enough protein from other vegetable sources without a problem as long as you simply get enough food.

First of all, welcome. Second, it's spelled Vegetarian.
I did it for animal rights reasons. Nothing should die for my vanity; unnecessary wants.
I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian, but will definately make the logical progression to being vegan.
There are a lot of veggie "meats" that taste pretty good. Try them out. Brands like MorningStar, Boca, Gardenburger, etc.
My friends are pretty mature (I am 24), but there are people like my brother who make fun of my vegetarianism. Just understand that they don't have the same values as you. You have to respect yourself and your sacrafice. Also know that many respected and famous people are/were vegetarians. They include: Gandhi, Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo DaVinci, Albert Einstein, Cesar Chavez, Pythagorus, and many more. http://www.veganwolf.com/famous_vegetari...

I like tofu, but you have to mix it with stuff. Cook it with sauces. Put it in soups. Also look into Tempeh and Seitan.
Good luck.

question 1
why are you vegetarian?
I became a vegetarian to protest animal cruelty and because I don't want to eat flesh/

question 2
what kind of vegetarian are you?
I don't eat meat, poultry, and seafood.

question 3
what are some ways that i can get into being vegetarian?
Sign a petition.

question 4
what do you do about your friends teasing you about it?
My friends are supportive of my vegetarianism.

question 5
can you give me some links or something to places that have good recipes for vegitarian main dishes?
I don't really know of any.

question 6
i dont like tofu. its seems like one of the things that vegitarians eat. help?

You don't need to eat tofu to become a vegetarian.

1: Mostly ethics, I wouldn't eat my dog. A very small part is for health.

2: vegan (dairy and eggs DO contribute to suffering and death)

3. Research. Find replacements for your favorite non-veg foods. You'll probably surprise yourself and eat a more varied diet as a veg than you did as an omni.

4. Nobody can "force feed" you anything. Don't make excuses for what you do. Nobody's ever really "teased" me about it, but the lame jokes got old years ago. You just roll your eyes and deal with it. It also makes it easier if you're not one of those preachy vegetarians/vegans. I don't preach to people, and they don't preach to me.

5: vegweb.com fatfreevegan.com veganchef.com veganmeat.com You can google vegan (or vegetarian) recipes and find an abundance of them.

6: So don't eat it. However if you find an asian restaurant that has tofu (it'll probably say bean curd) dishes, try them. Fried tofu in asian food is awesome. Not healthy...but awesome. :D

1.
when i was like 7yrs old i was at a friends house and came across this sausage which had this gross chewy piece of fat in it and after chewing that i havent eaten meat since. haha, then later realized how the animals are raised and slaughtered, its shocking and disgusting. ALSO the environmental issues and how selfish it is for the land to be used to raised animals when there are starving people all over the world. and only the richest 5% of the world get to eat cow.

2.
i dont eat meat, chicken, fish or eggs - unless theyre in a cake

3.
my whole family eat meat. and the same with all my friends. basically you have to find food you enjoy to eat and remind yourself of why your not eating the meat i guess? its never been a problem with me

4.
none of my friends have been supportive, but once i tell them all the reasons. some except them and others laugh and go 'so what it tasted good' which i find sort of selfish. its hard to go to restaurants or friends houses for dinner or whatever though

5.
make up my own

6.
i never have eaten tofu its disgusting i basically live off pizza, pasta, vege burgers, salads and milo lol and yes i have good iron levels

spent ates reseaarching this and telling you the facts then my comp went odd on me so lost it all except for this (I hate tofu myself honey but not necessary lots of yummy stuff out there these days lots of lovely Quorn roasts etc.,)
