What is a good substitute for onions?!
Answers: A lot of vegan recipes call for onions, but I really don't like them. They're icky. Would I be better off completely eliminating them from recipes or should I substitute them with something else?
I used to not like onions because I didn't like how crunchy they were or, if they were cooked, how slimy they were. I did love the taste of onion powder added to recipes, though, so I'd go with that suggestion. If a recipe calls for cooked onion you also might try dicing them up very finely in a food processor so that you get the flavor and moistness from the onion but you don't have the big chunks of onion you have to eat.
Hope that helps!
No substitute for onions.
Try onion powder instead- (available at Indian grocery stores).
either substitute them with garlic or get rid of them completely otherwize it'll tase funny :)
Leeks are good. They have a softer, more mellow flavor.
I often substitute...... ONION POWDER.....in my Cooking [ HOBBY ].... which I get at WAL-MART... as their Store Brand is ..... CONSIDERABLY.... LESS EXPENSIVE.... than the Brand Name....!

Thanks for Asking ! RR
You might like shallots. They taste a little like onion but they're a lot more mellow.
I would use shallots (smaller and sweeter) or leeks.
As a person who does like onions, I would advise you NOT to get rid of them completely. I might substitute shallots or red onion in place of yellow onion. They are a bit milder-shallots being the milder of the two. If your recipe calls for some type of fat - extra virgin olive oil, try caramelizing the onion/shallot in the fat, straining out the onion and using the leftover oil in your recipe. If this is too much onion for your, try just a little onion powder.
Hope this helps. Happy cooking.
Leeks, they are kinda like onions a relative I think, but if I recall they are milder.
Leeks can be substituted for onions. Thy have a much milder flavour.
Some religions prohibit the use of onion or garlic. Most practitioners are vegitarians as well. What they do use is a spice called hing. It smells horrible, like diesil fuel, but when cooked it has a mild onion-like flavor.
To add to the last answer, Hing is also known as asafoetida, which is what you'll find it as if you find it at all at a regular supermarket. "Asafoetida" literally means "stinking gum" but when you drop it into hot oil with other spices it actually adds a lot. Use it sparingly at first.
Do scallions count?
I wouldtry leeks and scallions they have a very mild onion flavor. Also, you may want to try roasting your onions in a balsamic glaze. Even if you do not like onions, you would not believe how sweet they get when you roast them.
Leeks, shallots, and scallions.
I don't see why you cannot just leave them out.
My best friend doesn't like them either, he just never uses them.
