What exactly is high fructose corn syrup? Is it considered vegan?!
Answers: Probably a stupid question, but my oldest sister is vegan and she avoids even products with high fructose corn syrup, so Im just wondering what it is exactly?
High fructose corn syrup is a chemically altered man made type of product that is often found in soft drinks. It's basically a sugar substitute and shouldn't be consumed by anyone. I give my son only one type of juice that doesn't have this product in it because it's not healthy. It is probably the number one reason for obesity in America, your sister has made a wise choice.
Sugar...and lots of it. Yes it would be vegan.
Its a highly concentrated mix of corn syrup. it is very unhealthy and will probably begin to disappear as more people are aware of its negative impact and corn will be used for oil.
high fructose corn syrup is a highly processed "sugar"...it is made from corn. im not sure if its vegan though
sugar made from corn.your body cant digest it so it stores it as fat,its bad stuff ,thats y so many people gain weight.
vegan diet is totally without animal products. high fructose corn syrup is made from vegetables, primary corn so that would fall under vegan dietary standards.
her decision to stay off high syrup products is probably because of the change of property in this product. she probably prefers to eat foods in its natural state and not have it processed.
Fructose is just sugar that are in fruits. I don't know why a vegan would stay away from that. She probably has other reasons. Vegans eat fruits and vegetables. It doesn't make any sense to me.
It's a sweetner made from corn. I would say it is vegan. However it's alot of sugar, so perhaps she is avoiding the fact that it leads to adding extra pounds.
you'd think high fructos corn syrup should be vegan friendly...no animal products of any kind here...well, your older sister has apparently done her homework and it is understandable why she might not choose to consume High Fructos Corn Syrup (plus, it's very unhealthy)
HFCS is different corn syrups that have undergone processing with ENZYMES to make the content more fructosy (sugary). This then is usally mixed with regular corn syrup.
The enzymes that help process the corn syrup usually come from protein/amino acids of animal bio-product. And while those enzymes are not a part of the final product, they are used to make the product.
I don't know that I've ever heard of a vegan cutting out high fructos corn syrup, but it make sense, why one might choose that. Plus, as I've said, it's a very unhealthy product anyways.
as long as the debate over its safety continues it's not in my diet, and its in everything that is made for profit (almost) I cook and rarely eat out except at a fine 4+ star place.
Most food processors use it because it's cheap. I've recently started buying foods like ketchup without it, and the ketchup tastes so much better than your Heinz type brands. Tomato sauce and peanut butter also taste better without it. That, and I'm allergic to corn make me avoid it if I can.
Yes, it's vegan. I am extremely allergic to it and she should probably avoid it just because it is really unhealthy.
Yeah, it's vegan, but I try to limit my consumption of it because it's really, really bad for you. I no longer buy sodas wtih artificial sweetener, and that includes HFCS. So it sounds as if your sister avoids that stuff for health reasons, even if she's vegan for different reasons.
