Don't forget about grains! Pretty much anything made from wheat (or rye, oats, barley, quinoa, millet, etc) is on the table. Whole grains, whole grain bread, whole grain pasta, breakfast cereal and crackers are all available without milk. you just have to be sure to read the labels -- or make your own.
As for dairy replacements, I suggest the following:
*Butter: replace with Earth Balance Buttery Spread or other dairy-free margarine
*Milk: replace with soy milk, rice milk, almond milk or oat milk
*Yogurt: Silk Live Soy Yogurt is very tasty imho. They don't have strawberry banana by me, but they do have just strawberry! I like the raspberry myself.
*Ice Cream: Tofutti, Rice Dream, Soy Dream -- all of these are frozen desserts made without dairy
Eggs -- Not sure if you'll be doing eggs or not. If you aren't, I like Ener-G egg replacer for baking. You can also use flax seed powder and water, but I prefer the results I get with the Ener-G. There is a way to make "scrambled eggs" from tofu, but I don't care for that texture, so I don't have any experience, but you could look it up (I provided a link)
As far as regular meals go, if you're not in the habit of cooking, you'll probably want to start. Get yourself a vegetarian or vegan cookbook (I like "Vegan Planet" by Robin Robertson). It doesn't have to be hard, though. You can make plenty of meals just like what you're used to, but with some notable substitutions:
*Spaghetti with Meat Sauce -- instead of ground beef, use TVP or veggie crumbles (like Boca brand)
*Chili -- same as above, with beans, of course
*Stir Fry -- get a variety of veggies, and serve with tofu, tempeh or nuts instead of meat. Goes great with brown rice!
*Burgers -- make veggie burgers (Gardenburgers, Boca burgers, Morningstar Farms Burgers, Amy's Organic California burgers...these are some common ones)
Lastly, whatever you have trouble finding at a regular grocery store can usually be found at a natural/health foods store or organic market. There are several places to buy such things online (the second link is an example).
Congrats on your choice and best of luck!
Try going Boca. If you love burgers but also want to keep it vegetarian, boca vegieburgers is the way to go.
I think out of personal experience is to check out a store called The mothers Market. It was basically made for vegans and vegetarian and I think most have a vegan restaurant inside. You can check there for meal alternatives. I know at Islands restaurant your husband can get a meat burger while you can have the veggie burger ther its good ive tried it but has lots of calories. Also try soups in the tofu line, veggie stews, and salads. I encourage you to check out the book Eat right for you bloodtype, all you have to know is your blood type and how to read. In that book you will find all foods compatible with your blood and body. For me it was all veggies pretty much with the exception of salmon and tuna.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck!
God Bless!
One easy way to transition is to swap vegetarian ingredients into meat dishes you already make. Some people have told me their families don't even notice. For example, put veggie ground round into lasagne, or swap plain soy milk and enerG egg replacer into baking recipes instead of milk and eggs.
It's great that you want to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, but you need some other things for protein, etc like whole grains(brown/wild rice, buckwheat, quinoa, couscous) and legumes(soy products, beans), and healthy fats in nuts and seeds.
Soups and stews are good places to start, especially if you use beans and lentils. Also, try experimenting with ethnic foods - curries and stir fries are pretty simple and yummy.
The tofu line is huge now and includes, among others, veggie substitutions for almost any type of meat, different soy milk flavors, ice cream, whipping cream, and yes, strawberry banana soyogurt.
You can also buy frozen dinners that are healthy and pretty good from Amy's kitchen, or other companies depending where you live.
Good luck!
