Just moved from San Francisco to a small Texas town?!
Answers: I just moved from San Francisco to a small town outside of Houston,Tx.... It's only for a year but I am finding it very hard to find Vegaterian foods here. Like soy and other fake meat. I asked some guy that worked at the Super Walmart where they keep the Tofu and he said what's that and laughed at me. In SF they have lots of options.... Do you have any suggestions?
I live in Spring,TX( moved here almost 2 years ago). I am finding HEB(the bigger ones) & some of the Krogers to be stocked with a decent supply of "Faux" meats & other health foods.
Wal-mart is hit or miss. I find some "gourmet" things there but not Basics.(?!?) recently found a small selection of Amy's frozen meals at the 1 on FM 2920 & Kuykendahl. Easily $2.00 cheaper than Kroger or HEB, Target has them too.
On 249 & between Louetta & Spring Cypress going north Is a decent Health Food store: American Health Foods. Good prices better than Kroger, HEB & Whole Foods, nice helpful staff. I also use Grace's Health Foods on 45 & FM 2920 east side of 45 in a shopping center. Not huge but has a amazing selection & will order things when they can.
I also every now & then head into Houston to WholeFoods, the 1 of Kirby is pretty good. I do a little stocking up.
I am a Vegan with a huge list of food allergies(50+) so shopping is a huge chore. I am also active with several Raw Vegan groups if you are interested. 1 meets up off of Sawdust Rd(& 45).
I hope this helps you some.
Slainté(to your health)
Yeah, you gotta search hard, or else start eating meat.
Move back to San Francisco; Texas is yucky.
Move to Austin.
start to find more
I feel bad for you. You moved from one of the most educated, open-minded, progressive places in America, to a backward place where people are proud of their ignorance.
Get the heck out of there.
Search for a store in Houston called Whole Foods..i know there is one off of woodway in Houston. They sell stuff like that. Its a health store but big.
I know that at HEB's in San Antonio have tofu. Not sure if you have HEB's where you live. Check with places such as Whole Foods or Sun Harvest. I know they offer lots of variety on healthier foods so they might have TOFU. Hopefully you have something comparable near you.
move to canada. be free
You just have to know where to look. My brother is an ovo-lacto vegetarian and lives in Texas. There are places like Rice Epicurean and Eat Zs. Houston is such a large place with so many varieties of foods. You can also look for local farmers. Admittedly, Austin would probably be more likely to have vegetarian friendly food, but Houston should have plenty.
Can't you order things like Tofu online? If not, here's a list of Texas stores that sell it. I don't know if your specific small town has these, but maybe you could drive to a bigger city every few weeks to stock up.

I live in a small town outside of Houston called Baytown. There are many whole food stores in Houston. Just look in the Yellow Pages.
get on the phone and call around to the stores...both grocery and health food. They will tell you if they have it or not
I once lived near Scottsbluff, NB pop. 16,500?, and they had a mom and pop health food store. Look in the phone book, or look in Yahoo Local. Search for health food under your town's name. It will bring up the nearest matches and ones farther away too.

The WalMart could have tofu, and the guy is a real idiot. Just browse the store. I am pretty sure that the WalMart near me has meatless hamburgers in the frozen food section. You may have to find an Asian food store for the tofu.
Welcome to texas, the greatest country in the world
forget about TOFU you are in the beef capital of the world
have a steak it won't kill ya.
it's ok to eat meat Yepp.
There are plenty of stores that sell vegetarian foods. Like some of the other people have said we have H-E-B stores and Whole Food stores...I would definitely try these as they have so many options and as for the incompetent people saying Texas is backwoods, non-progressive, blah blah blah...that just shows how ignorant you are as an individual.
SF to Houston? Gotta be the ultimate in culture shock. I feel for ya---
You may need to go to Rice University area to find such things. It will help if you can find same super market in Houston,TX.... that you were shopping at in SF, CA.
Do your shopping by mail or on Internet. Caned Soya products(Burger/ meat imitations) are very easy to find on Internet. WalMart should have Tofu in Magnolia. Ask the same at service desk they will look it up on the computer and guide you to proper allies.
Magnolia., is strictly meat and Potato country.
You just got new employee or a employee that did not care to help you out, he should have ask the front desk, or guide you to it. They can look up on the computer to see if it is stoked by the store or it is a "Special Order Item".
Tofu is very common item you should be able to find.
Howdy. I've lived in Texas since... always.
Wal-Mart has fake "meats" in the freezer section (usually next to the ice cream/frozen desserts). They keep tofu in a small refrigerated section near the produce. If you can, I would suggest driving to Houston once a week where there are more options for vegetarians. I live in East Texas, but I work in Dallas. So when I can, I pick up groceries in Dallas where the stores are more veggie friendly.
Also, Houston has been named one of the fattest city in America several years in a row (as well as taking the #1 spot multiple times). I would stay away from their restaurants if I were you.
phil: I'm proud of my ignorance. I graduated High School with a 3.6 G.P.A. and graduated college with a 3.956 (that's only one B...ever). So thanks for the stereotype... real "progressive thinking".
Some people I know who live nearby Houston drive in once a week to visit Whole Foods grocery to stock up. Kroger has been good to get healthy foods in their store. In my small Texas town, a fitness center got the managers at our Kroger store to open a whole section of healthy food alternatives.
I'm in Louisiana so ha! More backwards than you (at least it's not Mississippi). j/k
Walmart does have tofu! (and TVP etc) Even here in New Orleans, so I'm betting they have it in a bustling town like Houston. It's in the produce section in the refrigerated part. Around the salad dressings and the pre-sliced carrot sticks and packaged fruit etc. You'll also find the Soy cheese and things like that right there.
The Veggie burgers and other Morningstar/Boca products are in the freezer section. Sometimes with the frozen veggies and sometimes with Micro-meals. You'll have too look for those.
My Walmart has even gotten a few Amy's soups in recently so it's only a matter of time before more Veggie products become available.
Below is a link listing the Whole Foods Markets in Houston, Tx.
I'd try Brookshire Brothers. I'm from a small town here to and go there for things like won ton wrappers and such. Our super Walmart has tofu in the veggie section. Good Luck.
Welcome to normal living. Now get with it and eat a normal diet.
Are you gay? Don't be gay. You in Texas now, eat some BBQ!
Ya ,stay in the closet !
yea quit bieng a friggin wierdo,... eat some meat dude it is disgusting what you are trying to do here is unwelcomed in texas for the most part.. its gonna be expensive but realize you are in beef country try ordering food online
