If they want to call themselves vegetarians then they shouldn't be eating squid ink as it is taken from the ink sacs of a dead squid.
It depends on how strict a vegetarian they consider themselves. Some vegetarians eat fish and shell fish and some don't. Individual choice I would say. All the best.
