New to being a vegetarian. Any tips on how to do it the right way?!

Question: Recently I have decided to become a vegetarian, I was only going to cut out red meat first and then cut out all other meat however I haven't had any chicken or fish yet either! I don't even crave the meat at all. Please let me know some websites to visit or literature to read regarding the correct way of being a vegetarian. Also some good recipe ideas would be nice too.

The veggie society have some great info pages.

Its all clear, non preachy and not overloaded.

www.vegsoc.org

They have pages for new vegetarians, heres one:

Make sure you check labels. If you find you eat a slaughter by-product, don't beat yourself up over it, just learn for next time.
Here's is a page about potential stumbing blocks:

Try the ranges of fake meats, they may help you. One burger or ham tastes very different to the next so try different manufacturers. Don't expect the taste of meat but they can form a "central" item on the plate instead of meat - it sometimes help people transition.

You will not need supplements, vitamins or need worry about iron, protein etc. its really FRUSTRATING to see people give that as advice, its is all myth. The veggie soc pages can help with all this info, here is thier fact sheets page, loads of interesting info:

Vegetarians eat food, sick people pop pills.

Transitioning to completely home made food is the best long term option. Its better for you ( that would be true for meat-eaters as well ) and tastes much nicer than the faux meats.

Best of luck with it

im pretty sure you hit the nail on the head.......vegetarians dont eat meat.........so dont eat meat...................

This is a good website..
Things you need to be concerned with are mostly getting your protein and vitamin B12.
Good protein sources are beans (rice and beans together), tofu and milk products.
You also want to take a multi-vitamin and add a B-12 vitamin.

Goodluck.

Frugal Gourmet has a bunch of good recipes that are vegetarian, and the ones that aren't are still good if you just leave the meat out.
For some soy "meat" products, if you aren't allergic to soy, I suggest thing from the brands Loma Linda and Worthington. Boca also makes some good hamburger style stuff.
As the guy above said, beans are great for protein. Frugal Gourmet has a great red beans and rice recipe (again, just drop the meat or use Boca crumbles instead). Soy milk is also very healthy if you are okay with the flavor. Also, many of the "vanilla" flavored soy milks, no matter what people will try to tell you, actually contain _less_ sugar than real milk. If you haven't tried it yet, Westsoy is one of the better brands. Indian and Thai restaurants are often very good places to eat out for vegetarians.

Are you just dropping meat, or going all out vegan and dropping the eggs, milk, etc., also?

You will find tons of info online. Compassionate Cooks is a great site for podcasts, recipes, and other links. You will need to make sure you get some form of vitamin B12, and you can google "vegetarian B12 supplements" - Luna bars are a great vegatarian source of B12. Have fun learning all about it. You can find a free "vegetarian starter kit" online on many websites as well. They send you some good info.

Make sure you don't end-up eating mostly carbs and cheese! Put lots of vegetables, legumes, and a little fruit into your diet. I find that the best way to not get too much carbs and dairy is to just go ahead and use vegan recipes a lot of the time. A really awesome book is called How It All Vegan.

Just make sure you don't substitute the meat in your diet for cheese and junk food!! THe majority of your diet should be a wide variety of whole grains, letumes, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables.

Dairy, eggs, meat substitutes, white breads, sugars, and junk food should be eaten with careful moderation.

Take it from me.. I was 206 pounds while being vegetarian.. because I did it the WRONG way.. Thankfully.. I've lost alot (almost 80 lbs!!)

Don't eat meat and please don't bore your friends with your new regimen. Lots of good recipes on the internet, a search will be fun.

Good choice!!! Here you will find some good recipes and tips on vegetarianism.

Think you're a shoe-in for heaven NOW? *laughter*

This reminds me of this vegan couple whom an ex gf knew where she was a FAT pig, and he was skinnier than a rail!

She liked to eat the potato chips and ALL sorts of junk food while he tended to adhere to the stricter interpretation of "veganism," i.e. starvation! *laughter*
