Is fish overrated?!

Question: I've never eaten seafood in my life and I don't think I have an omega-3 (or is it omega 6?) deficiency. If I have one, it sure doesn't have any symptoms. I rarely eat flax seeds either. How do you explain it?

'tis a good question.

I've lived quite happily as a veggie for 28 years, I'm now 42 years old and up to this last year i'd never heard of Omega-3. Now, apparently, its essential i take suppliements or foods fortified with it.

Its just vitamin and food manufactures propaganda.

Mind you,the same goes for all vitamins, protien, iron etc. I never consider if I'm gettng the right amount - i just eat !!

yes, fish is over-rated, unless it's red snapper....omega-3, you can buy it in a bottle...drink up!

fish and seafood are underated in my opinion - we dont eat enough fresh fish. now i dont mean eat more frozen fish fingers. i mean fresh fish.

go to red lobster and order a lobster with come crab cakes and clams. try it. gonna be good.

Sounds to me like you eat a well balanced diet. And omega3 can be gotten from other sources besides fish. Some people just aren't seafood eaters. I am but I don't eat it because of the omega3, I eat seafood because I love it!

YES, once a month is fine for me, maybe even less.

Fish is fantastic! I love the light, but firm, flaky texture that many white fish like grouper, halibut and tilapia have. The taste is very mild; and, in many cases, the fish takes on the flavor of whatever sauces, spices or herbs you put onto it.

But you can also get your omega-3s and omega-6s from other foods...

Linoleic Acid (Omega 6 family)
Vegetables
Fruits
Nuts
Grains
Seeds
Good sources:

Oils made from:

Safflower
Sunflower
Corn
Soya
Evening primrose
Pumpkin
Wheatgerm.
Alpha-Linolenic Acid (Omega 3 family)
(Please note - fish is not the only source of omega 3 acids. Flaxseed oil contains twice as much as is found in fish oil!).

Flaxseeds (linseeds)
Mustard seeds
Pumpkin seeds
Soya bean
Walnut oil
Green leafy vegetables
Grains
Spirulina
Good sources

Oils made from:

Linseed (flaxseeds)
Rapeseed (canola)
Soya beans

I guess it's personal taste.

i am a very picky eater and i love fish it all depends on what type of fish. my personal favorite is mahi mahi and talapia and yellow tail.

You can't really tell if you have an omega-3 deficiency by any one problem. It prevents problems that often arise late in life and also in conjunction with other unhealthy behaviours - heart problems, high blood sugar, memory loss and rheumatoid arthritis.

Flax and fish aren't the only sources of Omega 3 fatty acids. Kiwi fruit, black raspberry, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, and greens-fed dairy and eggs are pretty common foods that all provide omega-3's.

It's okay if you have never tried seafood before. Now is a good chance to start! If you want to get an easy start then try some shrimp. Seafood is not for everybody. If you don't like it then seafood is probably not the best food for you. It's nothing to worry about. If someone asks you to a seafood restaurant, you can tell them that you don't like seafood. If they think you are weird then just ignore them. It's not weird to dislike seafood. Plenty of people hate seafood and not because they might be allergic to it.

you don't think you have deficiencys?????

If your Patient (you) gets ill will you blame youself?

Are you a Doctor?

Omega-3 fatty acids improve brain function and memory. Take an I.Q. test. That will show your deficiency.
