Can you get different types of tofu?!

Question: i thought it would have a bite to it, but i've just bought some and it was like set custard. if i'd've known i'd've rather boiled an egg.

Yeah you can, there are about several types!

Soft Tofu (fresh) - It is the moistest variety of Tofu with the highest content of moisture. This also makes it extremely delicate. It is mostly used as a sweet dessert but some varieties; especially Japanese and Korean are salty and are eaten with pickle.
Firm Tofu (fresh) - It contains a lesser amount of moisture then soft tofu. The exterior has the same texture as the cloth used to drain the water. It is firm yet soft.
Dried Tofu (fresh) – This has the least moisture content of all fresh Tofus. It is usually served shallow fried or cold.
Pickled or fermented tofu (processed) – This is a dry fresh tofu which is left to dry and ferment in the open. It is then kept in containers full of salt water, vinegar, chilies etc. Like most pickles it is salty and spicy.
Smelling Tofu (processed) – This has a strong smell and taste, even considered rotten and is appreciated by die hard enthusiast.
Sweet Tofu- Preparation of this Tofu is characterized by the addition of sweeteners into the soymilk while it curdles.
Other varieties include savoury, fried and frozen types as well.

yes

There are different textures, and some specialty stores have different types. Wholefoods sometimes have ones that have mixed in spices to them. Try there, or trader Joe's.

do you mean like different flavors or different textures?

i know stores like safeway and winco (or in case you don't have those in your area- any major grocery store or health food store) have different types of textures.

i have seen products made out of tofu, like tofu hot dogs, turkey etc. (those are also aviable at the stores listed above )

i've never seen different flavors, but tofu normally takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with.

try stir-frying it with some vegetables, or put in a milkshake with some fresh fruit.

good luck!

yes, there are a few different types of tofu. It's up to your purpose or the recipe.

there are different types but the ones ive tried are all a bit like that. some are firmer than others but the way you cook it makes a difference. i would fry mine in deepish, quite hot oil (you could try tossing it in spiced flour or something first if you like) so it gets a crispy 'crust' on and dries out abit, but i think it will always be a bit soft and eggish.

soft/ firm/
