Why is there a misconception that there are more female vegetarians?!

Question: I've seen this question being asked frequently now and I think nothing could be further from the truth. Vegetarianism has nothing to do with gender. The belief that men are more 'manly' and women are more 'sensitive' is highly sexist, stereotypical and backward. I've seen plenty of 'sensitive women' who would gnaw at steaks like hungry wolves.

There is nothing manly about ignoring cruelty or poor health.

Vegetarian men are more likely to recede into the background for fear of ridicule but this doesn't mean there are any less of us. Those ladies looking for a vegetarian man just need to look a bit harder instead of assuming there aren't any.

I completely agree. Even with so many vegetarian celebrities out there being male the population still seems to believe it's only a female thing. All the members of Outkast are vegetarian, Russell Simons, Paul McCartney, Jouquin Pheonix, Andre 3000, Alec Baldwin, Clint Eastwood, Josh Hartnett, Masta Killa from Wu-Tang clan, and Toby McGuire are all vegetarian. So if all these guys who are either sex icons or considered manly men are vegetarians I would think more guys would be accepting of it. It's almost like the Jews back during the holocaust. They had to deny their own beliefs due to the fact they might be scrutinized, tortured, or even killed. It shouldn't be this way especially in America.

Oh, and for Suspect Zero I'm a vegetarian, I'm clean, and I'm a US soldier who fights for your right to say whatever prejudice comments you want including those that bad mouth those who fight for their country. I don't need your appreciation nor do I want it because there are plenty of other people out there who give me the faith to keep on fighting. A little humbleness would do you some good.

I agree with you - and I'm not a vegetarian. It's just the sexist sterotyping of our society. More men need to come out as vegetarians in the mainstream to change the misconception.

I see your points, but I think you left something out: lots of vegetarian-related things are targeted to women. PETA ads, tofu burger packaging, everything is designed to attract women, hence more female vegetarians, and why males would fear being seen as "unmanly" or "gay" if people knew they were vegetarians. (There are a lot of male vegetarians? I've only met one, as opposed to about 30 females....)

I don't see why you have such a problem, I asked the question of why there are more female vegetarians than males, i wasn't saying that's always the case, it's just what i have noticed and i wondered why.

Sexism.

Yes, there are a lot of ladies running the show at PETA, but if you go to any other animal right meeting, you'll find the majority are men. Cruelty investigators sent by these groups are almost always men. Animal "liberators" are almost always men.

I have met plenty of vegetarian females that "only eat fish" or are "vegetarian most of the time" and even one that eats bacon, but I have yet to meet a male vegetarian that wasn't what he said he was.

People have to look deeper, but more importantly, people who are piscavores and meat eaters have to stop claiming to be vegetarians.

Sexism can be seen from both directions.

How many men answered your question? Don't count me I'm a flexetarian.

Some things in life are self explanatory.

give me a steak and a beer, GOD gave us both for consumption...thanks God....
