Steps to becoming vegetarian.?!

Question: After recieving a extremly upsetting e-mail (www.meat.org) I've decided I'd like to become a vegetarian and then progress to a vegan the problem is I'm 15, I doubt my family will understand or back me up! Can anyone help, I'm very passionate about doing this.

I would also like some information on what things are 'safe' to eat and what isn't.

YAY ! Good for you! I went vegan the same way as you did. My family does not share my enthusiasm, so I sit in a corner and nosh my Tofu sausage and Tofutti bars with glee. They do like my "deli style" tofu sandwiches, however.
There are so many very tasty products out there, chances are you won't even miss the meat. Congratulations on your decision. You'll save approximately 100 animals per year, simply not buying or eating them.

You go girl. Trader Joes' has tons of good stuff.

Here's a few sites:

Peta has lots of links.

im a vegetarian and i eat vegetables(of course), rice, noodles, pasta, salad, soup, lasagna and anything of that matter

go to www.peta.org

tell them that it saves them money on meat, and they can just put that money into saving animals, also you can show them the pictures and talk about how you dont have a say in everything but you do have a say in saving a little animals life!

I did it in steps but I didn't plan it exactly it was more of a natural process for me.
1st I stopped all red meat. So I was eating white meat and tuna fish (never liked much seafood)
2nd cut out all meats except tuna fish
3rd cut out all animals
4th stopped wearing any animal products
5th stopped using any animal products and by-products and began buying all natural and organic as much as humanely possible.
6th cut down on all dairy products (they upset my body so this was more about health issues for me)

If you do it gradually it won't freak your parents out as much. Good luck with goal!

I think the above ideas are great. If you know someone who is a vegetarian, become better friends with them, ask them to help you out. You will be surprised how having a vegetarian friend can be encouraging on this path.

Things that aren't generally safe to eat if trying to be a vegetarian is gelatin (Jell-o, Starbursts, marshmallows, gummis) and tallow. Chicken and beef stock.

Vegans don't eat any animal products, including honey.

Step one; quit eating meat.

Step two; quit bathing

Step three: start preaching.

Stop eating flesh to be a vegetarian and then stop eating any animal products to be a vegan. You can't possibly not use animal products in today's world so don't even shoot for that.

To the poster with the propaganda: if a person quits eating meat they will save 100 animals per year? Which vege promotional site fed you that silliness? If I eat beef and pork that means I'd have to consume an entire pig or an entire cow every 3.65 days.

The absurdities in this section are neverending.

I eat a lot of fruit, veg, rice and pasta also i go like veggie mince which you can make a lot of delicious meals with.
I became a vegetarian when my mother passed away in 1994, from no fault of my own i was put in the position of carrying on the farm business with my brother Tony, from then on we diverted from a beef herd to a suckle herd of cattle, still not happy with my lot when my brother passed away in 2000 i sold all the cattle, and now keep RSPCA free-range rescue hens etc, they cost me a fortune to keep but its very rewarding to see them running around the farm.
