Going Vegetarian or Vegan?!


Question: I read some things about all the Turkeys being killed and slaughtered for the holiday season and I am thinking about going Vegetarian or Vegan I need some tips and advice.
I do not eat red meat
I do eat chicken so that could be a prob but I think if I find healthy things to eat instead I wont even miss it
So what things can I eat what things cant I eat?
For breakfast I usually am running out the door but for when I am off work I love waffles, fresh fruit, glass of water and glass of OJ
Sound appropraite?
For lunch I usually eat a salad but since chz and bacon bits are off the list what can make eating salad more tasteful? I usually dont eat house salads anyways I like Casear Salad the best! no parm chz of course and I dont eat croutons so romaine lettuce and casear dressing okay?
And for dinner me and husband ALWAYS go to restauants can you give me ideas to order so I will stay away from chicken?
Can I have pasta? what sauces are out of the question?
Is fast food out? Thanks!

Well, here's a big distinction for you.

Vegetarians - most permit themselves dairy and eggs

Vegans - no dairy, no eggs, no refined/white sugar (as it is filtered with charred animal bones), no honey (due to cruelty and frequent death to bees as result).

There are also "hidden" ingredients that contain meat or dairy or eggs, you simply will have to read food ingredient labels very carefully.

I'm in the same boat as you, I recently transitioned from vegetarian to vegan (before that, I ate cheese and eggs and other such things). Here's a sample menu of what a vegan might eat:

Breakfast - a bowl of oatmeal with fruit and some nuts tossed in

Snack - a banana and peanut butter

Lunch - Wholegrain bread with lettuce, tomato and smoked tempeh (very similiar to bacon but all soy ingredients); or a wholegrain wrap stuffed with beans and veggies for a vegan burrito.

Snack - apple

Dinner - Tofu and veggie stir-fry over noodles; pasta and sauce with meatless meatballs; veggie "meat"loaf with mashed potatoes; etc etc. Lots of recipes out there.

Dessert - vegan cookie; sherbet; soy ice cream; vegan pie, lots of recipes for these too.

Here are some vegan recipes for Thanksgiving, but I would heavily recommend browsing sites like goveg.com and vegan.com to learn all about the distinction between vegan and vegetarian, also go to the library and look up books on being vegan and vegetarian as well as recipe books, you'll be doing a lot more homecooking.

Unfortunately most fast food is not vegan and not even vegetarian (for instance, McDonald's fries use animal ingredients in their artificial and "natural" flavors, as disclosed by McDonalds in 2000), KrispyKreme doughnuts are also not vegetarian but the company will not release the exact things in their recipe that aren't but it is presumed that either animal fat is used to fry them or some natural/artificial flavor.

Pastas (except for egg pastas) are vegan.

Sauces vary when it comes to being vegan, some have cheese or meat ingredients, and many have added white sugar or even the artifical bio-engineered concocation, corn syrup. So you might want to make your own or just look at labels very studiously.

ok go semi Vegetarian - NOT VEGAN (its too extreme too hard of a change)

eat FREE RANGE EGGS.. these are nutritionally better than battery hen eggs and do not contribute to cruelty of the chicken industry.

I stopped eating chicken because it is the cruelest meat industry there is.. (did you know that for every chicken you eat, 1 is ground up at 1 day of age? - they are sexed at age day 1.. the females get their beaks cut off and vaccinated - the males get ground up as waste to make pet food) and it gets worse from there...

think of this as well.. 1 dead chicken doesnt feed nearly as many people as 1 dead cow does... so eating chicken is more cruel.

I kept 8 free range chickens over the summer (sold in fall because its too cold to winter them here) they produced more eggs than our family of 3 needed... we sold many eggs for $2 a dozen.. you often can find farmers to sell you eggs or at farmers markets (chickens naturally dont lay as much in the winter)

more and more restaurants are offering Vegetarian options - look for those and make sure you let them know you appreciate them.

drink milk too - and eat cheese.. its very hard to make a switch suddenly and most people fail because they rush it..

There are as many reasons for becoming vegetarian or vegan. It's a highly personal and individual decision to make. But in a survey conducted on behalf of The Vegetarian Society the majority of people said that they gave up meat and fish because they did not morally approve of killing animals, or because they objected to the ways in which animals are kept, treated and killed for food.

As for Food, Vegan and Vegetarianism is such a growing movement, restaurateurs can't afford to ignore it. In the unlikely event that a restaurant doesn't have anything for you, don't be put fobbed off, especially with the offer of a fish or chicken dish which are 'practically vegetarian' - they're not!! Simply ask politely if they can make something specially for you. if they can't be bothered, why give them the benefit of your custom when there are plenty of other places all too willing to help.

Just follow in what you believe in. They are both awesome lifestyles! There are endless recipes you can find on line, at bookstores and in magazines that will satisfy every craving you have!

Sounds like you not only are "going vegetarian or vegan", but "going" to create a lot of marital strife for "turkey rights". Get a grip before you jump into a lifestyle that may wreck your relationship with your spouse.

Just to let you know, most brands of bacon bits are actually imitation bacon bits (and vegan). Bacos, for example, are vegan. This kind of stuff can happen a lot, get into the habit of reading labels, sometimes you'll be surprised by what is vegetarian and vegan. Caesar dressing is rarely vegetarian though, it generally has anchovies in it.

The only way anybody could actually be vegan/vegetarian is if they grow and proudce their own food. Did you know that the plows that tend to grain fields run over and murder tons and tons of woodland critters? So every time oyu eat a piece of bread, you'll be nibbling on little traces of bunny blood. Here are just a few of the thigns you probably use that harm animals:
Toothpaste, film( contains gelatine), certain hairbrushes, yogurt, chewing gum, gummy candies such as gummy bears or gummy worms, cheese (contains rennet, which is derived from the stomach of dead baby cows), most gravy, perfume or cologne, and much much more.

So sit there and tlel yourself that being a vegetarian is a superior moral decision, but in reality they kill and devour animals just like the rest of us. The only difference is they LIE ABOUT IT. Nice job.

I'm not a vegetarian. I eat meat every day and I LOVE IT. There's somethign about pressing your teeth into a nice juicy slab of cow that really puts me in a good mood. I hate most vegetarians because they think they're better than people who eat meat, but they really kill animals just like the rest of us. They are hypocrites, my friend. So instead of being a hypocrit, join the rest of us and stuff a piece of serloin in your mouth.
