Vegetarian food?!?!
Answers: i've decided to become a vegetarian, and i need some food suggestions for when I go grocery shopping with my dad. Some inexpensive, vegetarian foods. (i don't eat beef, pork, or chicken). I have thse grocery stores in my city: Independant grocers, Food Basics, and A&P. It would be very helpful if you get your vegetarian foods from those stores too, this way I could know where to get it. Nothing really weird like tofu. I'm gonna have to convince my dad to buy it so I don't want to ask for what he might think is "hippie food". Thanks.
Lentils.....love them. Use in curries, soups, stews. Use them in pie fillers and salads. High in protein and fiber. Great for waistline and budget. Flavor them up with other vegetable and spices and herbs. The internet is loaded with lentil recipes, very easy to cook with.
"really weird like tofu"? Not that a vegetarian HAS to eat tofu, but with this kind of attitude, I wonder how long you'll stay that way. You can eat veggies, fruit, meat substitutes, beans, nuts, eggs, dairy, grains. Hopefully these are not "weird".
Dairy products and whole grains have some proteins. And I eat stuff like bean chili, bean burritos, pasta, vegetarian tacos and lasagna, etc.
Also, for quick microwave meals, brands like Morning Star have meat substitutes and yummy meals.
Just experiment and don't be afraid to try new things. Being vegetarian doesn't limit your choices all that much- most of us actually end up eating a bigger variety of things, because there are so many good vegetarian foods available.
Good luck. =)
Well, you know what meat is, don't you? Like chicken, beef, etc. Anything that doesn't have meat in it is vegetarian. Comprende?
There are loads of meat substitutes in the frozen section usually, can't miss em. And beans are good. As are potatoes. Find a love in carbs....Carbs are your friends!
OH! And lentils, are really cheap and taste good. But a little on the hippie side. Say they were in a magazine or something?
Maybe get a few recipe books?
Here's what my dad tells every one, "hey, 80% of the food in the store is vegetarian." Not very helpful I know, I find it encouraging though. Also, this will be harder if you live in cattle country. I do, and it's almost impossible to eat out around here. I have been a vegetarian all my life, so I don't really know what it's like to have to think of something to eat that doesn't have meat. I hope you are able to find something.
You need to educate yourself on being vegetarian and why you want to do so. Go to the library grab some good nutrition books and start learning. This will also give you some good info to share with your folks and will show that you aren't just going through a phase.
Look for a book called The Ten Talents, put out by the 7th Day Adventists. That ought to hush him up. My mom used that book all through my hippie childhood. Don't become a vegan. Dairy and fish for protein. Make sure you are getting the proper amounts of nutrients. If you don't mind the risk of GMOs (genetically modified foods) then you can get many meatless varieties of any meat. Tofu and wheat gluten may give you gas. Get lots of spices or eating will be a bore. Veggie stews and good bread can be yummy. If you still eat dairy than cheese will become your best friend. Sandwiches! get creative with them. Hummus and feta on pita(the Greek kind) with olives is yummy, but a bit on the hippie side. As well as yogurt. Many Indian and Thai dishes can be done meatless and quite addictive. But the spices can get expensive. If you feel faint, go eat some meat. But after a while, your body will have a hard time assimilating meat.
