Question: if someone quits eating meat they can save the lives of 100 animals per year.

Considering if I eat beef and pork that would mean I have to eat an entire pig or cow every 3.65 days, how reliable is this information?

Can someone please post links to verify these numbers. I would like to see which veger sites are claiming this impossible fantasy.

To me it sounds like one of the 'statistics' some people on here pull out of thin air to make their case for veg*nism, like veg*ns are slimmer, live longer, don't get cancer, are more peaceful (!).

No real evidence. I'm a vegan and I don't think we do ourselves any favours by repeating unchecked and unproven 'information'.

Well, the vast majority of animals you would save are chickens and fish. After all, it's quite easy to eat what amounts to one chicken in two or three days.

It takes a little longer to save an entire cow or pig, but saving chickens is pretty easy.

It is 93 and is based on the number of animals in the farming industry killed in the USA and the pop. It does not however tell you the true average number as one animal can be anything from a prawn to a cow, but one cow would last far much longer than a prawn. It also does not tell you the average of other counties, as they may eat more or less (but I'm betting its less).

Logically if you want to still eat meat and save animal lives you would eat the biggest, in these case it would be beef.

I wouldn't think of it as "saving lives", as many of them wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for the meat industry. I'd think of it as reducing cruelty, which is a bit hard to quantify! :-)

When I ate meat, I could eat a whole rotisserie chicken by myself in less than an hour.

If this number is including seafood...people it tons of shrimp a day. Fish are eaten quite a bit by some people.

I know lots of people don't even consider shrimp as animals (I personally do...I mean they do belong to the animal kingdom).

So that may be a source for some of those numbers.

HERE'S the USDA's site..they have a chart telling you how many pounds of certain meat's(chicken,beef and such) were consumed in 2002. You add all the different meats consumed up then divide that by how many people there were in 2002 to eat it....and there's a more corect answer.... It's the closest thing to a correct answer I think your going to get.

The facts and sources were published in a vegetarian cookbook ( with academic research references ) in 1990. Someone asked this about a month a go and i dug out the book and quoted it and its included references.

I cant be bothered doing it again, the answers are in this forum though if you care to use the search facility.

The numbers are not as simplistic as many claim, but the research has been done by reputable sources, its just there for the reading. I hope you find it.

I always used to wonder how many little bits of different cows were in the burger I was eating...then add in the number of pigs that made up the 6 strips of bacon...then the calves that died to make the cheese...I think they'd add up pretty quickly. It's pretty gross when you think about how many dead animals could be in one bacon cheeseburger. Then how many cows did it take to get the fat that McDonald's sprays their fries with? Dang...you're eating a whole farm in one combo!
