I realize that this isn't the "P.E.T.A." but as many of you are animal activists, what is your take on the!

Question: idea that the total animal liberation should include not having pets any longer and that horses should not be ridden?

Okay,
What they mean is that, don't BUY pets because they come from puppy mills and trust me, you don't wanna know what that is! But they recomend adopting.
And horse racing: I never knew PETA was agianst it, I do know they don't like horse-racing.

Horses enjoy being ridden if they are cared for properly. Pets like cats and dogs and other small furry friends like rats love being with humans so I don't see any harm in that. I don't agree with people keeping the more exotic pets like monkeys.

No matter what you get into there are some that make the whole thing look bad.. the same with P.E.T.A. some groups are good some aren't. Same for S.P.C.A. I don't think it's right to ride a horse. I don't ride them. I don't agree with not having pets. We are given dominion over animals we are suppose to be their help meets.. not the other way around! I agree with Curious Alice whose above my answer!

Peta is not against owning companion animals but rater against animal abuse such as chaining dogs, dog fighting, neglect, and puppymills and backyard breeding.

Most domesticated animals have been living as part of human society for so long that it would be inhumane to release them into the wild. I'm mainly talking about dogs and some cats. All the different breeds of dogs are a result of centuries of us breeding them, and for the most part, are unfit to be "wild animals."

I'm not sure if all that is true, but that's what I have assumed. By total animal liberation, I refer mostly to the freedom of animals from slaughter for food and clothing, animal experimentation, entertainment (circuses, bull fights, rodeo, etc.) and from things like puppy mills where they are bred without regard to health, safety, or comfort. Ultimately, humans would have to let go of their dependence on animals for all of these things.

If you wanted to watch a documentary about Human dependence on animals, Earthlings is perfect.

releasing animals that have been domesticated for so long into the wild would do more harm then good. the majority of them wouldnt know how to survive in the wilderness and would perish. i take care of my pets and dont mistreat them. i dont believe it is exploitation if they seem happy. besides if they wanted their freedom that bad theyd leap the fence when i put them out.

These activists are extremists and should be ignored as such.

Horses enjoy a strong relationship with a rider. Someone who takes care of them, walks them, feeds them, grooms them, etc.

Domesticated pets like being around us. Of course, this presumes a decent home. My cat wouldn't know what to do in the wild. Sure, she hunts lizards, but that's about it. Her daily exercise includes: getting up to drink water, getting up to eat food, getting up to use the box. Besides that, she's pretty happy lounging in the sun (a cat upside-down and purring is definitely happy).

So, don't listen to these extremists. They go too far. The should focus on real abuse.

I have no problem with domesticated animals as pets. As for horses, I've often wondered if they mind being ridden...and how hard it is on their backs as they age.

Where are many levels of animal activists.

I would on a personal note classifile them into 4 groups

Animal welfares

People who believe that using animals for testining, fur, eating is ok but believe that it must be done humanity

P.E.T.A activists

Range from welfares to hardcore.

But mostly consists of teenagers who are against animals being used for eating, wearing or testing on, These are the kind that will write protest letters, go on demo and try to enlighten people to give up animal. Some people say it it a for front for other groups.

ALF

hardcore group.

These people follow a credo that says you can do any action for liberating animal as long as

1. no animals or humans were hurt in the procss
2. You were veggie at the time.
3. It in the animal benfit
4. You thought of the ramifications of your actions.

Such actions involve trying to bankcupt firms or scare people off work that in animals. Such stuff is like senting out death theats, breaking into labs setting animals free and destory equiment. Realsing animals from mink farms into the wild and by using any means far or foul to make you give up using animals. Other techinquies invole planting of fake bombs, arson in some cases or sending notes to companies saying that where products have been mess with.

SHAC and its likes.

A miltia group that is willing to use physical force to meet is goals, they can use all of the above tatics. At the moment such tatics going go as far as phsycially attacking members of animal testing compines.

Now depending on what group you belong to the question of if horses should not be ridden will alter the outcome. Welfarists and low AR activists will says it can be cruel but it is tolurated. While the supports or members of the likes of the ALF and SHAC will say it is cruel and is against the wishes of the animal and wherefore it should not be ridden.

P.E.T.A.great word nowsaday,i try not to inform u i am as a ,er, animal ativis, wow,i could had gone into the bush to get tigs right, butt as usual, time ain't gain me right, and time left me,and i do lost and lost round the bush,ah,where am i,yes,i just do,em,u knock n u kwong,ok,g,staff..............

I don't think animals should be used for testing, but I do think it's perfectly fine having them as pets. As long as they're happy & healthy, or like mine, spoiled, what's the problem? =]

i feel that as long as the pets are kept in good conditions and loved, its okay. its sooo hard for me to support peta because they do many things i dont agree with. i go to peta2.com to go on the boards just to talk to other veggies.

Yes, the animals we have shared our lives with have chosen us. Ever notice how very few animals actually share our lives with us?
Most don't want to.
It's symbiotic. Just like ants and aphids.
Check out the book "Covenant of the Wild: Why Animals Chose Domestication"

It's hard to answer that one because a lot of animals that exist now like horses, dogs/cats, cows, goldfish, etc... would not exist in their present forms without centuries of human intervention. To create animals that would not do well if left completely in the wild almost seems like a cruel joke, like "ok we're done with you, now hit the road!"
For a goal such as total animal liberation, the only solution that could possibly work is a multi-generational very gradual one.
