Why do people have a bad opinion of vegetarians?!

Question: I don't get it. How is it so hard to grasp not wanting to eat meat? We don't pick on people who don't eat pickles. We don't make fun of people who don't like tomatoes. Meat is gross. It's dead and bloody and rotting...sick. I don't care if someone else wants to eat it, but I don't want dead cows and pigs rotting away in my stomach. It's really not that big of a deal. It doesn't affect anyone else but me. It doesn't seem strange to me either...the fact that so many people still eat meat seems strange. So what's the problem? I noticed one person on here who said vegetarians were the most hated "race" on the planet. lol We're a race unto ourselves now? Awesome.

Huh? I think vegetarians are neat.....

I have no problem with vegetarians....

Taste just like chicken.

B/c ppl dont have a good knowledge of the benefits of being a vegatarian. PURE IGNORANCE.

People who criticize vegetarians are just jealous because they probably dont have the discipline nor the will power to do what you do. Congrats..on your healthy life.

I don;t know, I'm a vegetarian, but I guess some vegetarians, like members of any group, can be preachy, not all, not even most just some, just like any group. I'm vegetarian and I don't really have a problem with meat, I'll prepare it and cook it but for some reason I just can't eat it, it just seems wierd to me.

You're killing that poor carrot plant when you yank it out of the ground...

Shame on you...shame shame...(just kidding...I like vegetarians...I have one for lunch everyday...lol...)

It's just ignorance.
I'm omnivorous, but I wouldn't look down on somebody who doesn't eat meat (as long as that person isn't looking down on me for eating meat, of course).

My advice to you is to ignore it, by getting angry or upset you are giving the ignorant exactly what they want.

Bear in mind that this is ONE culture, lamb! If you and I take a little hop skip and jump over to, say, a Buddhist monastery in Eastern Asia somewhere, there'll be vegetarians all over the place and MEAT-EATERS will be the odd ones out. ;)

Dunno i guess to some people not wanting to eat meat just means that overly fussy and a bit i dunno how put uuummmmm sissy i guess.

People are just closed minded. They don't think of alternatives the way other people do. You do it your self without realizing it, I can tell by the way you wrote your question. No offense to you of course. It's just the way most people view the world now a days.

oh...no..i have good opinio about them...and who don't they just not capable to have a lifestyle as vegetarians have))

Wow, I didn't know that there was such hostility towards vegetarians. I'm sorry to hear that, hun.

It's your personal choice to not eat meat, and there ain't nothing wrong with that. Live your life the way you want to. Eat what you want, drink what you want, and exercise the way you want to exercise. :-)

But as for you thinking meat "rots" in your belly, I am going to have to disagree. I've never had meat rot in my belly (it comes out within a couple of hours, for me personally).

But, I have gotten sick on eating pinto beans. They did not digest well, and I puked them up about 20 hours later, it was weird! Beans are my favourite food, and I love them dearly, but the gas and the indigestion is horrible. lol

Cheers

It's not the fact that they are vegan but many vegetarian proporters are annoyingly vocal on other social issues as well.
Look at your post for example..very condescending. Food does not "rot in your stomach" it is digested and your body absorbs nutrients from it.

If animals weren't made to be eaten, they would not be made of meat.

Additional comment:
Rotting is the same as decomposing. Properly stored foods are not considered decomposing and yes, condescending is an appropriate description of your post.
"How hard is it to grasp not wanting to eat meat?" It's not a perplexing concept. The attitude of your query is not far from that of the annoying militant vegan activist type who have given your kind a bad rap.

I wouldnt say bad things bout vegetarian
but in Chinese way of vegetarian
we ate artificial meat, made of flour and a bit chewy as meat and it is completely unhealthy
if it is a pure Vegetarian on pure Vuge
It is definately healthy
I love your point
it is indeed that it's bloody and stink
but it is just the pleasure for eating it
it is our habit and preference of having meat

First of all, animals were put on earth for a reason. TO EAT THEM! Think about it...... if our ancestors were vegetarians they probably wouldn't have lived. They wouldn't have had enough strength to live. But now I guess it's a tiny bit different because they are a lot of different alternative proteins. But anyways, all of the vegetarians I know are weird.

well,i'ma meat eater and i'm fond of vegetarians,i wish i had the will power to throw away a juicy steak for a salad but i think most of ''my kind'' think that you guys are disgusted by us,if i were a vegetarian i would be digusted

I wonder if there are two kinds of vegetarians - one kind of vegetarian quietly goes about their vegetarian business, enjoying their menu choices without making a fuss about it, and leaving others to enjoy theirs. The second kind of vegetarian may at times rub others the wrong way, not by having different menu choices, but by complaining and criticizing others' choices. "How can you eat that?" "That's so gross!" "Don't you know that meat is bad for you?" Remarks such as these may make an otherwise nice vegetarian appear to others like a know-it-all . . . and, let's face it, nobody likes to be around a know-it-all.

well i can't say for you, and some vegetarians i have met are ok. i have found most to be rude, pushy ,overbearing, and uncompromising, and totally unwilling to peacefully coexist with us omnivores.
hey all i want is lunch not a lecture, if a vegan can't do that one of us needs to leave the restaurant. your rights end where mine begin

I personally don't notice one way or the other what people eat or don't eat.
But, apparently I am supposed to notice. On spur of the moment, I invited some work folks back to my place and ended up ordering pizza. The vegan got really pissed about the order and let me know. Loudly.
Like I was supposed to be examining her lunch every day to figure out her dietary preferences?

So, it isn't the fact that she doesn't eat meat that is the problem - it was assumption that I was obligated to adjust my behavior to accomodate her preferences- and the attitude that not eating meat makes her a superior being. It's not the dietary choice that grates on the nerves, it's the talk and attitude that often goes with it. Just be a vegatarian quietly and I'll be an omnivore quietly, and there will be no issue.

People who don't eat tomatoes don't typically make a big deal out of explaining why they don't eat tomatoes. Or say things like "I just don't understand how you can put that into your mouth" to those of us eating tomatoes.

I think that it is normal to eat what you like,so we dont eat meat. We think that it is wrong (IT IS) and we are usually thinner than people who eat meat so they are jealous of us because we have enough self control

Don't be too concern about what the opinions of the "Carnivores"., all those T-Rex's love to victimize a lot of people. If you want to live on a "Herbivorous diet", then do so proudly!.
Just call me a Omnivore!

Why vegetarians are made fun of? Answer is very simple; vegetarians are civilised people; they do not want to nor do they like to inflict pain on living beings, nor do they want to grow on the pain and suffering of the animal creation. To feed oneself and nourish on the lives of sentient beings is the height of selfishness, and is a very very immoral behaviour. Apart from the fact that most of the acquired diseases of the nonvegetarians spring from eating meat, the sheer force of compassion and respect for living beings should open the eyes of civilsed people everywhere that nonvegetarianism is blot on the human coscience.More obscene is the lip service rendered by devout followers of ethics when it comes to the issue of killing and eating animals.Slaughtering defenceless and mostly harmless fellow-creatures, is crude, crass and sinful. Do they ever feel that by killing the animals they are breaking one of the cardinal dictums of all religions-THOU SHALL NOT KILL? Many thanks for this question.

Look at your own question. You are pretending to know the unknowable. Your question to be fair should have started this way, "Why do SOME people....blah, blah, blah"

Because so many proselytize and say things like "meat is gross" and "dead and bloody and rotten"...for starters, then, of course, their "holier than thou" attitude. TOTALLY obnoxious. Frankly, I find "vegans" and vegetarians to be bloody bores. If you are one or the other, enjoy and keep it to yourself...have go now, having some bloody rotten meat for lunch!

While not all do this, many get a bad rep because they shove their beliefs in people's faces where they are not wanted and refuse to back down.

It's two reasons, mainly.

1. People don't like something that's "different."

2. Vegetarians are thought of as "preachy" people who won't shut up about their views. Some folks have this impression right away even if they have never met a vegetarian.

Cows are vegans and they taste good too. I imagine if you cook one right it would taste good too.

I really don't pay attention to what people eat. So I don't even know what if the are veggies or not. However, read your own post and you might understand how some omnis will take offense at what you said and show some antagonism towards veggies in general. If people said the same thing you did about veggies, how would you feel? If I called plant foods, "manure stained, dirt filled, worm infested rotting compost in my belly" would you feel friendly towards me or would you be defensive and a bit peeved? I think you can answer your own question.

Okay, there are alot of reasons for not eating meat. Most of all we love to idolize creatures, like Bambi for instance. Disney made that film and suddenly every hunter is a killer. It is a wonderful world for all things. I was a vegitarian for 7 years, on the principal of saving animals. Then I realized there were no animals saved by my efforts.
Moreover, to have a proper diet, vegitarians will at some point be faced with getting live liver shots, or live a shorter life with some form of illness that liver failure brings. But if that is your beliefs, stick to your guns. (I know many other veggies too who faced this. Some decided on eating meat again to avoid these costly shots.)
Truth is, meat gives a certain protein when ingested that provides greater metabolism for other nutrients. I do not think they entirely know why, but I have also seen some veggies that get intestinal problems, esp those who ingest alot of fatty items.

When someone makes bombastic and loaded statements you you did in the following quote . . .

"Meat is gross. It's dead and bloody and rotting...sick. I don't care if someone else wants to eat it, but I don't want dead cows and pigs rotting away in my stomach."

. . . it leaves people with the opinion of you and other vegetarians that you are socially inept, judgmental, and intolerant of other's decisions.

My encounter with "modern" vegetarians/vegans has formed my opinion that they are not worth my time and to be avoided. Your statements have once again reinforced my opinion.
