Vegetarians how strict are you about hidden animal ingredients?!
What are your policies for this?
Answers: I avoid gelatin completely, but with some other things like "natural flavor" if I can't find the info online and/or the manufacturer is of no help, I'll make judgement calls as to whether I think it would be animal based or not.

i'm the same way. i avoid gletine, i havent eaten it in years, so i pretty much know what contains it, but i still red all the labels. if it say natural flavors, i just think about if it would make sense for meat to be in it, if i'm not sure, i dont eat it
The strictest vegetarians on the planet are the Jains in India, who don't even eat vegetables that might have bugs on them.
Most people eat microscopic bug parts with their vegetables and fruits whether they realize it or not. And swallow spiders in their sleep. So there's no such thing as a true vegetarian, IMO.
If the item is sweet, I usually assume "natural flavor" is something like vanilla. But other than that, I pretty much assume "natural flavor" is something animal-based. I ate Doritos for years before I discovered that most flavors have pork in them disguised as "natural flavor"... yuck. Yeah, it's a judgement call; for myself I err on the side of caution a lot more often than I did in the early years.
I guess if you try to stay to the "true" foods such as whole grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables...you can pretty much stay as true to your diet regime as possible. The less processed the better. Let our bodies be the processors! :)
I will often eat things if it says "natural flavor" but I really shouldn't. Oh, the thing about swallowing spiders is an urban legend. See here:

I am very strict about anything that might possibly have any animal product whatsoever (other then eggs & dairy - I am Ovo-Lacto).
But since I also keep strictly kosher, it makes it a lot easier. Kosher products are carefully labelled (many mainstream products are kosher too) and they specify whether they are meat, dairy, or neither.
If you want further info on how to identify these products, email me at dstaum@gmail.com
im very strict. if im not sure if it suitable for vegans or not i wont have it. but its different for different ppl. have wotever u are comfortable with.
p.s.im veggie not vegan but i dont like having any animal products if i can help it)
I'll make judgement calls too...but most of my diet is based around non-processed foods that are fresh before I cook them. Processed=not good.
As a general rule, I try to eat things with the least amount of ingredients and with ingredients I can identify. In the documentary 'Go Further' by Woodie Harleson, one of the guys said, "If you can't pronounce it, Mother Nature didn't create it, and you shouldn't f'ing eat it."
I don't go out of my way to avoid animal ingredients. A lot of animal products add a decent flavor to bland food.
i read and re-read every last ingrediant on all packaged foods just in case, i then look up the stuff online to make sure that my mind didn't skip anything or misread any of the ingreds. just to be safe. i am very safe on my animal of anythingness. very strict vegetarian, im 13 if that helps any with whatever your doing school or something, a lot of people ask for it. so here ya go...
so yea.
