Will any of you veggie heads slip up on Thanksgiving?!
What would a vegan Thanksgiving meal consist of anyway?
Just curious, don't get all defensive or anything.
Answers: Maybe grab a little pinch of the turkey or ham when nobody is looking.

HELL YES! I've seen the most sanctimonious of these veggie heads go crazy at the Thankgiving table.
I am having some tofu turkey.
I will not slip up.
I'm glad somebody asked this! I've been wanting to know also... I can't imagine Thanksgiving without turkey or honeybaked ham (and neither can my pets, wink wink).
I have been a vegeterian for about three months now but when I made the change I said that I was going to eat meat on Thanksgiving, which I plan to do. I won't do it next year but it would have been really hard to do it this year, since I already had plans to spend thanksgiving with my famil who uses meat or meat products to cook or season almost anything.
Not a chance.
No I will not "slip up". Many omnivores are so stuck in their own ways that they are convinced that all veg*ns, deep down, desperately want to eat meat. It's not true. Many of us find meat to be disgusting. That aside, even if I did like meat, I'm not going to throw away my principles and convictions just because there is a dead bird in the house. How weak-minded do you think people are?
Well, I was thinking of hanging out at this little vegan joint called "Celery's Place" or maybe the "Limp Cucumber" (you know, the places you recommended to Mr. All-State Vegan a while back: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;... ), but then decided I'd rather spend the holiday at home.
I just made my list yesterday:
roasted potatoes
cornbread dressing
roasted corn
pasta salad
green bean casserole
baked beans
rolls with jelly
sweet potatoes (with coconut and pecans)
and a whole slew of desserts...
mini pumpkin pies, pecan pie, pecan pralines, cranberry walnut bread, and coconut sorbet (it's better than vanilla with stuff like pecan pie because it's sooo creamy!)
This will be after we visit with both sets of parents. We won't be staying for dinner with either one because we don't care to sit around a big turkey carcass. I would not be tempted to take even the tiniest bit of any kind of meat or any food containing animal products. It's not like there are vegetarian plice. If we WANTED to eat that crap we would.
No, I won't "slip up".
What will I eat? ...I know, food.
We don't have Thanksgiving where I come from
I am bringing a Tofurky, along with my own veggie dish and a dessert, all of which will be vegan. I'll ask what I can eat of what everyone else made and will have what's vegan.... no slipping up for me.
i will not slip up
I haven't slipped up in 17 years, so I don't guess I will this Thanksgiving.
I'm probably gonna eat mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing and either a gluten meat or a soy turkey analog.. Lots of bread and sparkly grape drink. I'm not into pumkin pie, but I'll probably have a bit of whatever dessert is around.. I'm not into yams or cranberries either..
Ah.. the way thanksgiving should be.
what do you suppose Turkeys are thankful for at Thanksgiving time anyway.. us vegetarians, of course!!
a vegan thanksgiving dinner would be very similar to mine accept the bread couldn't contain honey, whey, mono-and-dyglicerides, the margerine used on the bread and in the Mashed potatoes would have to be 100% vegetable oil, no whey, cassien, etc.. the stuffing couldn't contain whey, honey, etc... and the gravy would have to just be flour, oil, water, and vegan approved seasoning..and their veggie meat would have to be vegan
Doable, but too picky for me. I commend the vegans, but having to be sooo picky about a dinky little milk protien in my bread or something is why I am not claiming/willing to go vegan at this point. Besides.. the veggie meats that have a bit of milk or egg in them taste better to me. Hopefully some day I can go vegan...
Not I!! My vegan versions of Thanksgiving within a omnivore meal are as follows" Lasagnette with Cinnamon-Cumin Spiced Tomato Coulis, Mashed potatoes w/ mushroom Gravy, Corn, Allspice Glazed Green Beans, BLACK OLIVES FOR SURE, a sweet potato dish (still deciding which one), Maple Carrots, Banana Bread, Spinach Salad, and still haven't decided on the desserts just yet! Breakfast muffins will be made with Pumpkin Puree! There's more, I just can't remember off the top of my head!
I have two vegan friends who make thanksgiving (christmas and new years too) into what they call "a trip to the dark side"... not only do they have a "pinch of turkey" (or ham) they end up eating more than everybody else..
Not me. I'll go for the desserts.
Slip up? For turkey?? NO WAY! I've always enjoyed the side dishes way more than the turkey! So this year being my first year not eating meat I am looking forward to the sides and desserts just like every other year!
No, I won't slip up.
I'll have all my own vegetarian friendly foods that will be quite tasty, so no point in stuffing myself with a dead bird.
No way, I'm having Tofurky ; )
When I went Vegan I went "cold turkey"
I haven't had milk, cheese, any meat or animal anything.
Just quit.
I couldn't just have a pinch of meat as a slip up.
I would choose to no longer be a vegan, and I know, for my lifestyle I am more than happy being vegan, and wouldn't give it up for a dinner with family.
If somebody slips up, they slip up. It can happen on any diet. Just because somebody slips up doesn't mean they are not a veggie or vegan. It means they wake up the next day and try all over again.
Just like when I was on a low carb diet and I caved for a beer one night!
Quit being so hard on your fellow eaters. Tis the Season to love and be loved!
I am vegetarian and I honestly have never had a problem filling my plate on Thanksgiving. My family always has a ridiculous amount of vegetables, so I always get what I want.
Vegetables mostly. I don't like the taste of turkey or ham.
nawhhh i'm eating cranberry sauce and thts like it.
Nope. No desire to, just like the past 15 years of being vegan. Let's see, not sure what I'll make this year, but in the past I've had:
Stuffed portobello mushrooms (filled with chopped zucchini, garlic & breadcrumbs plus herbs, dipped in olive oil and soysauce) - bake for 30 minutes (375F).
Bell peppers stuffed with wild rice, topped with cranberries and walnuts.
Mashed potatoes with gravy (vegan gravy's really good and not hard to find)
Steamed carrots and broccoli / Corn and green beans
Cornbread stuffing with corn and chopped zucchini mixed in
Butternut squash soup
Breadrolls w/margarine
Salad...I like cherry tomatoes, olives, avocado, slivered almonds or peanuts, bell peppers, etc. with dressing
Lasagna is good for a main course. For vegans like me, substitute crumbled tofu for the white crumbly cheese.
I've made homemade blackberry pie before, which turned out pretty good. There are ready made apple and pumpkin pies at Whole Foods (Fabe's brand makes great vegan pies).
So many options, I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Okay, I need to figure out what to make, because I'm not gonna make all that!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Well...
This will be my first Thanksgiving as a vegetarian. I was at Whole Foods a week and a half ago and stumbled upon a vegetarian turkey (I believe it was called Tofurkey). It was a ball of "turkey" with stuffing inside. My mom's making me that for Thanksgiving. I'll report back on it later. I hope it's as good as the real thing was.
