Why do vegans insist on using the names of omnivorous dishes for their food items, if we are all so immoral?!
I mean, if we are so bad, why mock our badness? I think cannibals are ick, so I won't be calling my roast beef "mock human rump". I'm just saying, being that you all are our moral superiors, you all should try and get better mainstream references for your, erm...cuisines.
Answers: Ok. Why call it vegan chili when there is no meat in it? It's not a true chili then. Call it..."protoplasmic tofu goulash" or something. Why call it "burgers" when processed soy proteins are not burgers. Why not call it "shaped and formed patty of soy proteins"??????

You are absolutely right, Golden! I've always wondered that myself. To me it is absolutely stupid. "Tofurkey", "Veggie Burgers", etc., etc., and the list goes on.
Why do companies try so hard to duplicate taste and texture of MEAT, and shape as you pointed out -- if it is so awful? And why do veggie heads crave it and buy it?
Seems really silly to me. I once saw a recipe for "Meatless Meat Sauce" . . . LOL.
I don't know why you have such a chip on your shoulder, but please chill out.
Anyway, I'm not a vegetarian. I've NEVER met one who thought they were better than I am because they didn't eat eat. We'd go out to eat and they'd order whatever veggie thing they wanted and I'd order what ever omnivore thing *I* wanted.
Vegetarian food is cuisine. It tastes wonderful, actually. They call it chili because that's what it is even without the meat. They call it a a burger because that's how it is shaped.
"Vegans" are weird. They refuse to eat anything with a face, or comes from something with a face. Like milk. Vegetarians are normal/ good people though. (sorry vegans)
aah. this explains a lot, "ashley"
I think they do it because It makes life easier.
also, Chili gets its name from the chili peppers used in its creation, not the meat.
what we carnivores think of has just "Chili" is actually "chili with meat" so I think vegetarian chili should be called "Chili with tofu" (doesn't sound that good to me, but who am I to judge? I'll stick with tofu in my Miso soup, thank you very much.)
i think your on to something... but i mean these cusines have been around a while...
iv'e been a vegetarian for 3 yrs now vegan for my first year... and i couldn't think of eating meat, but i will say that the it was good. it's appeals to the senses through your own habitual eating habits and that of centuries of culture. why not emulate in a good way? crap. i didn't mean to answer a question with a question.
Vegan chili, goulash, and burgers are given their names, because they're supposed to be vegan substitutes for those dishes, which normally have meat. DUH!!!
I'm not a big fan of the Olive Garden and I think their food should be called "Pile of S**t on my plate that pretends to be Italian food" but that's just my opinion.
If you want to call my veggie burger a poo patty, I really couldn't care less.
I think this is the second or third time I've said this to you but I'll say it again: No one thinks they're your moral superior just because you eat meat.
You seem to have a lot of issues. Do you feel morally inferior to people?
Chili gets its name from the peppers not the meat, and a burger is a burger because of the shape. To you soy burgers are not burgers, but to other people they are. A HamBURGER is a burger made with meat, a VeggieBURGER is a burger made with soy/vegetables/etc, a TurkeyBURGER is a burger made with turkey meat.
Just because the name is similar does not mean anything. Most vegetarians do not feel morally superior to anyone, we don't mind using a similar name as long as it is meat free. Normal people do not see this as an issue, and don't give it a second thought.
You've asked this question before; why do you care so much? Really, who with any life or imagination gives a toss what other people eat or what they call it?
Get out more, meet some new people, take an evening class - just stop spending your time fretting about other people's diets. Believe me, none of us give a flying one about your diet.
Chili is named after the spice used in it...not the meat...
But, anyhow, I think we keep the names of the dishes the same, with the exception of adding Veggie to the beginning, because it is what we grew up with and gives us a frame of reference. I mean, if I went to a veggie restraunt and saw protoplasmic tofu goulash on the menu, I would have no idea what it was and probably wouldn't order it...but if it said 'veggie chili' I would have some idea of what the meal I was getting would be.
Honestly though, the real Vegans on here have no interest in judging non-veggies...most veg*ns I know are pretty open-minded. It's the trolls immitating Vegans on this board that give us a bad name by posting insanely ridiculous things about 'morality'. By the way, the user who uses the word MORALITY in excess is a non-veg*n troll trying to give us a bad name.
People have already touched on how chili comes from the name of the pepper used to spice it and the fact that burger just refers to the shape, so I won't go into detail on those.
I would like to point out that this can be applied to plenty of other foods as well. People have gotten angry at me before for making vegetarian chinese and mexican fare, not realizing that a lot of those foods traditionally had little or no meat, and only started being made with meat in their Americanized versions.
People will sometimes say something like "It's not a burrito if there's no meat in it!" and refuse to listen when I explain that in Mexico they often make it with beans or rice instead of meat anyway. It's pretty close-minded and anglocentric , in my opinion.
Or even the people who think my cookies or pancakes aren't really cookies or pancakes just because I don't make them with egg. They don't realize that using eggs all the time in baking was a recent development in the USA, as they were considered a luxury until about our grandparent's generation.

Here Cookie me-- A quote from wikipedia:
"The name "chili con carne" is a slight corruption of the Spanish chile con carne, which means 'chile (peppers) with meat'. "
So, the spelling being different doesn't change the meaning.
The vegans don't name the items, the companies selling them do.
I know what you mean though.
Darkwolf---"is actually "chili with meat""---chili without meat isn't chili, the peppers are spelled "chiles" and the dish is spelled "chili".
how will we know if it has meat in it or not if it's not labeled as so?
They miss the wonderful taste of meat. I don't know why the don't implement a flexetarian vegan diet like mine.
You still get the vegan title and can eat meat.
it's called turkey tofu but its not turkey and thats what matters in the end.
im not vegan but
Big up to all vegans. respect.
