Vegetarians who DO eat chicken, seafood, dairy?!


Question: Hey, I would like to become a full veggie but that is soooo out of the picture (parents). How many of you eat all of these things? Do you still call yourself a vegetarian? Why do you eat these things and not anything else?? Thanks.

If you can manage to cut beef and pork out of your diet, you're at least making a step in the right direction. So if your parents are cool with that for now, go for it. Maybe you can ask them if you can only eat fish instead of the chicken...and when they see you're serious about that, maybe they'll be more open to you giving up meat, but still eating eggs and dairy.

About the dairy problem: those are the vegans who should not have dairy. And you forgot eggs :-) Those are also a no-no for vegans. Vegetarians can be ovo-lacto vegetarians, or lacto-vegetarians, or just ovo-vegetarians...
Chicken and seafood are meat - so, yes, technically those are not vegetarians...

My son eats seafood, dairy and he will eat eggs (chicken) but doesn't eat any form of meat. I buy separate foods for him as I and his sister are meat eaters. He considers himself a non meat eater and has been one for about 3 years now. He never considered himself a vegetarian as not to pin a name on himself.

I am vegetarian meaning I do not eat any animals including all animals: fish, seafood, chicken etc or anything that an animal had to die in order to get or process. I try to keep dairy to a minimal mostly because it bothers me. I do eat eggs but I prefer to get them from my sister's chickens since I know they are treated well.

Sounds like you are more interested in coming up with a label for yourself than really making any diet/lifestyle changes.

What you are describing is not a vegetarian. Period. There is no wiggle room here. You can eat what you want, but you will not be vegetarian until you eliminate ALL meat from your diet.

Since I'm still switching my diet and I also have two other family members in this household who aren't then I occasionally run into eating chicken or seafood but at this point I've just been putting my foot down. They are my husband and stepson after all and I feel that they should be understanding of my ethical and simple digestive issues with eating meat. I would just have a talk with them about it. Tell them what you could supplement the meat portion of the dinner/lunch with and that you'd be willing to prepare that yourself. I think fear in parents comes from believing the a child is trying to starve themselves by elimination meat products and that simply isn't always true. You could also explain your ethical reasons as to why you'd like to become a vegetarian. I think with good discussion they'd be more open to allowing you certain decisions that you could take responsibility for. Good luck to you!

People who eat Seafood, are Pescitarians.
(Those are the "VEGETARIANS" who eat those animals)

Dairy is Lacto- Vegetarian
Egg is Ovo Vegetarian.

(I only eat cheese. I don't drink milk)

I am not a vegetarian, I am a pescetarian. I eat vegies, fish, seafood and dairy.

You can eat whatever you want. Don't worry about labeling yourself and classifying yourself, and don't worry conforming to anyone else's definition. Just do what is right for you.

Technically speaking, you wont be a vegetarian.
Starting off, vegetarians eat dairy. Vegans dont.
Now let me just explain the types of vegetarians.

Vegan- Basically dont eat meat, dairy, eggs, honey, any type of biproduct. Also believed to be an almost life style since most watch what they wear, use during the day and everything to prevent animal testing.

Vegetarian- doesnt eat meat. Simple!

Pescatarian- Same as vegetarian, although does eat fish.

Flexitarian- a basic vegetarian that enjoys their meat on occasion.

Lacto-vegetarian- Doesnt eat meat, or dairy, but does eat eggs.

Ovo-vegetarian- Doesnt eat meat, or eggs, but does eat dairy.

Raw-vegan- Same as vegan, except will not eat foods that are cooked to above 115 degrees

It is impossible for someone to eat chicken or fish and be vegetarian.

The moment that they put either into their mouths, they aren't vegetarian and probably never were.

Dairy itself is not vegetarian but lacto-vegetarians eat dairy.

Vegetarians do not eat animals and even ants and worms are animals.

Chicken and seafood are animals, so eating them is not vegetarian. Some people eat them and call themselves vegetarian; it's really annoying to real vegetarians because the whole point was to not eat the flesh of animals. I hate it when people eat fish, birds and oysters or whatever and call themselves vegetarians.

I couldn't go vegetarian until I was an adult and moved out of my parent's house.

i don't eat any kind of meat. but dairy foods? yes. you would need that. what is cereal without milk? or omelette without eggs?

If you eat all of these things you are a human. An omnivore. As you and every one of your forefathers were and always have been.

You might want to Google "Flexitarian Diets" and check out the website. You will find more intelligent information than the folks on this forum of a single mindset would ever be able to give you.

I don't eat chicken or seafood or any other kind of animal...no matter what the amount. I do eat eggs and eat cheese every blue moon..at least two weeks go by if not more. I don't drink cows milk..I drink soy milk...but I do eat things that contain milk..like bread. Get it? Sounds funny yes..I know.

Yes, I call myself a vegetarian...I am a lacto ovo vegetarian...that means I include dairy and eggs in my diet still. I eat these things still because I'm not yet into the whole mindset of becoming vegan. I am weak. I cannot just eliminate these things from my diet..like meat. Meat was easy..I never liked the taste,mouthfeel,nothing about it. I hated meat for as long as I can remember. Meat reminds me of roadkill..enough said. Anyway..that's my explination for still eating those foods.

Even if there was no such thing as "Being a vegetarian" I'd still not eat meat..due to how much I disliked it. That's why I quit eating meat... But as of right now I still like those foods(eggs,cheese..and so on)..and haven't found the time,resources,willpower,and many many more excuses as to why I can't quit eating those foods right now. There will come a day I will though.

You could not call yourself a vegetarian and eat chicken or seefood. It makes no sense and is disrespectful to those that are vegetarians - it devalues thier beliefs.

Best of luck with it though, there really is no reaon why you cannot be veggie. Perhaps you need to help your parents understand what it means and how healthy it is.

Please do not assume the labels used by meg-gun are correct. Many vegetarians criticise the "vegetarian.about.com" site. Unfortunatley the author does not have enough conviction in thier article to respond to any of the complainants.

A flexitarian ?? How can you possibly have a vegetarian that eats meat occasionally. Does that mean every meat-eater is a vegetarian whenever they are not actually eating ? It makes no sense. Also, ignore ( strong word but it's what they deserve ) the trolls on here that try to promote "flexi" this and that. They are deibreately tryiong to mislead people.
