what is thanksgiving.

please don't think im stupid coz i'm not form the us and all i can make out is that the brittish came over to the us
i mean whats the big deal?

Everything but the turkey.

Make the stuffing with veggie broth instead of chicken. Make a side of vegetarian gravy along with whatever gravy they make for themselves. The canned campbells Franco-American mushroom gravy is vegan.
Ask them not to add milk & butter to the mashed potatoes, people can add the butter when it's on their plate.

Edited to add: This is also assuming it's some family thing, and you aren't a guest at someone else's house. If you're a guest, offer to bring a few dishes, and make them accidentally vegan (meaning "normal" food that isn't purposely made with "weird" replacements and stuff), i.e. the suggestions above. Offer to make stuffing and potatoes, and make them vegetarian-friendly. Everyone can eat them that way.

All the side dishes. When you are at someone else's house be gracious. Don't expect your host to prepare special food for you. Don't bring your own food, that's insulting. Have the vegetables, potatoes, breads, fruits, etc. that you can.

If you are vegetarian and not vegan, you have a lot of choices. Mashed potatoes, Veggie casseroles, sweet potatoes, all sorts of deserts, rice pilaf, all sorts of veggies...basically anything that doesn;t contain meat.

Personally I am Vegan, and don't hold a whole lot of stock in the Thanksgiving holiday myself...I see it as sort of celebrating the stealing of the america's from the native americans. Not trying to be nasty to anyone else out there, I know it is generally just considered a time to spend with your family and reflect on what you have to be thankful for. Anyhow...I generally spend Thanksgiving with my parent, who are full on meat eaters, and I don't expect too much. My mom was very sweet this year and offered to make the mashed potatoes with Vegan margarine and soy milk...which means a whole lot to me. Otherwise, I will just be eating the veggies, and will probably bring a vegan dish, like vegan sweet potatoe casserole.

There are many squash recipes for vegetarian entrees.I recently made one with kale and delicata squash. Cook kale with red pepper flakes, allspice and dired cranberries in pan. Put aside.Bake squash peeled and cut in 1 inch slices, rubbed in olive oil, salt, pepper and sage.

I've decided that i am bringing quinoa with carrots and lima beans in a lemon garlic sauce this year. I dont know about how you do things but my family is pot luck with whoever hosts making turkey, so there is usually a lot to choose from apart from the bird.

roasted potatoes, pumpkin soup, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, rolls, yams, tofu with stuffing cooked with vegetable broth

I eat everything that isn't meat, or includes gelatin or rennet.
I love...
Green Bean Casserole, Mashed Potatoes, Stuffing, Bread, Pies, Fruit, Veggies, etc. =] (I love squash and butter, or squash ravioli! =])

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! =]

Most of the side dishes are ok for vegetarians. But your question is confusing as to whether you want vegetarian or vegan alternatives.

I'm very excited about thanksgiving this year. It is my first vegan TG and I have convinced my in laws to let me cook them a vegan dinner. Here is a rough menu (and yes, it includes tofurkey b/c I wanted to try it so I will leave that out)

Sides:
Homemade carnberry sauce sweetened with agave
Brussels Sprouts with pecans
Baked sweet potatoes with ginger, cardamom, and agave
Garlic and rosemary potatoes
Salad with balsamic dressing and walnuts
Steamed kale with miso dressing (red miso, veganaise, sake, vinegar, agave)

For the centerpiece, I chose stuffed squash instead of turkey. I got Kabocha squash from a Korean market. I am going to cut them like you open up a pumpkin and bake them, then stuff them with a traditional (veganized) stuffing.

If you aren't in charge of the menu, you can still bring a stuffed squash or a side and ask to pop it in the oven...

Have a happy turkey...er, squash day :)

sweet potatos, green bean cassarole, pumpkin pie, apple pie, cornbread, corn, mashed potatos, stuffing, fruit salad, and cranberry sauce.

I have some sort of pasta. This year is eggplant Parmesan. Then stuffing. Mashed potatoes with garlic. And pumpkin or pecan pie. It's not hard to make a Thanksgiving meal that's cruelty free. You just find a stuffing with no meat in it and use a vegetable broth.
