Tofu sort of takes on the flavor of what you mix it with. So try mixing it in with something you like.
The key is to use the right tofu for the right application there are a wide variety of firmness and densities to choose from. I use about 7 different types for my family. I recommend getting a Japanese style tofu recipe book since they use it with regularity the recipes are varied and tasty. The recommended sauces and techniques are easy to follow and can lead you to develop your own specialties. For example I might serve extra soft tofu (almost cream cheese texture) as an appetizer with just a little soya sauce and green onion slivers or serve a morell mushroom consume with seaweed and firm tofu cubes. A extra firm tofu can be grilled and served with a chili sauce and a side of par-cooked veggies. You just need to experiment with recipes to get the flavor and texture that appeals to you. Remember just because an original recipe includes meat proteins for flavor (like bonito) it doesn't mean you can't change it to some thing else like mushroom, toasted soy nuts, peanut or any sauce as you desire. Tofu is usually mild in its own flavor so carries other flavors well. I hope this inspires you to shop a local Asian market and try a few types of tofu. Good Luck!
Tofu doesn't really have a taste...it takes on the taste of whatever you cook it with. Try getting some super/extra firm tofu, slicing it up, marinating it in something you like (terriyaki sauce, peanut sauce, salsa...whatever), then baking it.
add one pound of beef for every 1/2 ounce of tofu. Yum!
I like firm tofu for stir fry. I marinate tofu squares in teriyaki and lite soy. Later I stir fry some veggies, toss in the tofu add brown rice or noodles and yummy!! I've even added tofu to my veggie soup for extra protein.
Fry up a pound of bacon.....remove the bacon to a towel to drain.....add some sliced onions and peppers to the bacon fat, sautee till tender. Add in two pounds of sliced rib-eye, cook for like thirty seconds. put this on a loaf of sliced open Italian bread, smother it with cheese and put it in a preheated 350 degree oven for like twenty minutes. eat the bacon while the sandwich cooks, Pour yourself an ice cold beer and enjoy your sandwich.
Oh....the tofu....yeeeaaahhhh.....ummm...it is impossible to make it taste good.....go with the sandwich, you may die earlier but you will be much happier.
This is one of the ways I make it for my daughter. Firm tofu cut into bite sized cubes. tsp olive oil in pan. sprinkle with dill, chili powder and a pinch of salt. brown and serve warm. She loves it...I don't.
