What do you think about GM food dominating the food market?!
Answers: It is unbelievable whan you realise that what you eat is not exactly what you know under this or that name. New ingredients, suspicious additives... Any suggestion about genetically modified food will do. I believe that whoever eats too much of it can sustain some changes - e.g. in complexion. After all, nobody knows how much it can harm.
There was a scientist who did research on this and found that Laboratory rats sustained organ damage when eating a GM diet(I think the organ specifically mentioned was the kidneys)
Because he published this material he was hounded out of his job and made to lose face in the scientific community.
It is outrageous and wrong that farmers(or the stores that sell the foods) in The UK can use GM food to feed animals but not inform the public of this when the meat or animal products are sold. It is highly irresponsible and breaches our Human rights I would say(much as I hate having to resort to this defence since it is misapplied and misused so much) I will go further and say that our Government, who are supposed to protect our interests, should be held accountable
BAD. rats fed on GM potatoes developed cancer and smaller brains and testicles. POISONOUS!!!!!
why is it legal?
until someone comes up with conclusive proof that eating GM foods on a regular basis is harmful to people then there is no reason why we cant eat the stuff. if there are any side effects then they must be very minor as we would have otherwise heard something.
It's toxic rubbish and one day in the future they'll realise the consequences - like they used to think smoking was harmless, in fact they used to think it was good for you as an anti-stress tool. Now we know different and the same will be with GM one day.
Most major food manufacturers are indicating that their food is GM free - but there is no known eveidence that it is toxic - the rats quoted above intests would probably have developed the cancers if fed any food in the quantities that they were. I agree that GM food crops are a bad idea as they spread across to non GM crops as the pollen blows in the wind - if that happens then there will no longer be GM free seeds.
GM food does not dominate the food market in the UK. Consumer power has made quite sure of that. Regrettably I don't think it's the same in the US where corporate power dominates.
you can reduce your exposure by buying less processed foods and using farm or local grocers rather than chains.
in the uk we are rejecting gm and not flooded with it like the usa
I can imagine a doctor in the 1960's saying what zaron has "if there are any side effects then they must be very minor as we would have otherwise heard something.
".............just as he is giving out thalidomide to a pregnant woman.
is blueberry suggesting that it would not be legal if it was harmful.....errrr, need we remind people that cigerettes are legal ??
There is no conclusive evidence that it is harmful, but it disturbs me because the US does not require labels. Monsanto is free to do whatever they want.
I think we should have a choice whether we want to eat it or not. I am an educated adult who pays taxes--why shouldn't I have the right to make my own choices about what I eat? The citizens of the US were never given the right to vote on this; what's next?
There has been some progress, though. Now Americans can buy growth hormone free milk in a regular grocery store.
There is "organic" produce available, but it is usually overpriced and you still don't know for certain whether it is genetically modified or not.
I think we shouldn't fool with Mother Nature and the rampant genetic modification we are doing will come back to hurt us.
it's terrible! If they don't label which foods are GM, then they don't want you to know who is resposible and who to sue. They are essentially using all of us as guinea pigs. They are poisoning the food supply and should be stopped!
All the food we eat is genetically modified from the original by thousands of generations of selective breeding by humans. If the GM is something you could feasibly achieve by normal breeding I'm not going to panic. Sticking luminous jellyfish genes in a chicken is definitely something to worry about though.
On a lighter note, someone managed to accidentally breed a poisonous potato by normal means a few years ago. They didn't realise until people started keeling over from solanine poisoning. Maybe we should bring in mandatory testing for all new crops.
Pisses me off. GM anything is banned in other countries, but the leading GM countries of Canada and USA are totally going insane with it... not to mention pushing their way into poor nations who have no idea what a GM food is, and how great it is that this food will grow in the sand! It's a miracle food!
