Hii, i am a vegan and 12 years old.?!

Question: I am a vegan and i'm 12 but everyone finds this weird. I live with a family of 3 other meat eaters, but prepare and cook all of my own food.

It's like you can only be a vegan if you are adult.

Does anybody else have this trouble or have a comment on this?

Hi & well done for going vegan
there are lots of vegans your age with the vegan society so get in touch with em http://www.vegansociety.com/

whenever you do anything different from the majority they dont like it, people as a rule dont like change

my parents went mad 8 years ago when I went veggie & friends too - telling me the stupid things like one bacon sandwich wont hurt, animals are meant to be eaten - etc

when I went vegan 4 years ago I got the same rubbish & still do - but I now have alot of vegan & veggie friends, run a vegan business & I dont give a hoot what anyone else thinks of me

a good tip is to get some veggie vegan mags & leave em around for your family & friends to read - when they think your not looking
they will learn about it & understand more, better than if you tell em

be a great example & they may go veggie themselves once they see how easy it is to do

another way is to download the radio shows of Dr Joe
http://www.drjoeesposito.com/radio.html
put them on cd and listen to them when they are around or leave them about in the car

turned a few of my mates vegan as they then understood what meat & dairy do to your body & how you can fix almost any illness through diet

well done- you ahve saved so many animals so far

ive never met a vegan, but i dont see anything wrong with it, if thats what you wanna do then rock on.

Good for you for sticking to what you believe in! It must be difficult for you when the rest of your family does not make the same food choices as you. As you get older, I'll bet it will get easier for you to find other vegans who have similar ideas and values as you do. I became vegan shortly after I finished college, and I wish that I had done it when I was your age! Even though you may not have a community of vegans surrounding you right now, know that you are making a great choice and that there really are lots of other people out there who feel the same way that you do. Look into finding vegetarian societies in your community or participate in online vegetarian sites. Maybe that will help you feel less isolated. I hope this helps! Good luck!

I'm 13 years old, and have been vegan for a good week now.
The rest of my family are also meat eaters and i can't stand it.
They don't really support me at all and I have to go to the health food store by myself to buy my own food. It is pretty hard to go against what everyone else is doing though in my opinion, it's worth it because it's something I beleive in. So, good luck to you. (:

stick with it and dont lets them make u feel bad or stupid. your gonna be healthier then them and save thousands of animals from pain and death so ye dont go back

P.S. humans arent meant to eat meat or we would only have canines and animal protein wouldnt give us canser etc. and we are meant to hav dairy after the age of like 2 and especially not cows milk i mean why would a human eat sumthing thats meant for cows?

Good for you for making such an important and mature choice at such a young age. For your sake and for the vegan reputation please make sure that you do it right. Being a vegan requires more than just cutting out animal products from your diet. I'm sure you already know this but you're going to have to put more effort in than most of your friends. Make sure you get enough wholegrains (pasta, bread, rice etc), beans, nuts, seeds and of course fruit and veg. Also for omega 3 and fatty acids Flaxeed powder is great... just put a tablespoon of this in with something like cereal. Some kind of fortified food is also essential for vitamin b12 so shop around and you should easily find a fortified soymilk, cereal or spread.

Good Luck with everything... a vegan diet for a 12 year old can be extremely healthy as long as you do it right :o)

are the plastic shoes uncomfortable ?

i think its great that you cook all your own food
although once you hit adolescence you can acuse your family of not catering to your tastes

After you've been vegan for awhile, fewer people will think it's weird or harmful. It may take awhile, but most of them will get used to the idea & don't worry about the few who never get it-- that's their problem, not yours.
Aren't they @ least impressed that you fix your own meals? That shows a lot of maturity & commitment.

I've been a vegetarian since i was 9 years old (I'm 22 now). Of course, it was easy since my dad and sister were vegetarian as well.

But no, lots of people think that if you don't eat meat, you won't grow properly. This is a myth. I've known vegans who are doing well. I know I'm not a vegan, but as a vegetarian, I'm one of the tallest girls in my class...since like 8th grade. I'm not unhealthy, I consider myself quite healthy.

It's all myths. Explain to your friends and family how you're actually doing yourself good. I hope you're keeping up on making sure you get the right foods (I know vegans have this tendency to just eat junk food).

But wow! You cook for yourself! That's amazing, you're pretty awesome.

Kid I say you're on the right track!! Humans are meant to eat Vegetables - here's why...

(and for the person who thinks humans are meant to eat meat - hope you realize how inconsiderate to nature -and inhumaine that choice is...)

Anatomically:
Humans have longer intestines (10-12 x body length) because vegetables take a short time to digest and therefore a longer intestine is required.
In meat eating animals meat takes a longer time to digest and therefore a shorter intestine (3xbody length) is required.

So when humans eat meat it's stays in the tract for longer and releases toxins which affect the organs.

Our front teeth are flat edged and not razor sharp. All carnivorous animals have sharp teeth for tearing flesh,
- but we don't have this.

Meat eaters swallow food without chewing it so don't need molars,
-but we have molars.

-We don't have sharp claws to hunt and tear prey.

Meat eaters have strong hydrochloric acid to digest meat,
-our stomach acid is 20x less strong .

Meat eaters have no skin pores therefore perspire through their tongues
-Man and herbivores perspire through skin

Environmentally and economically:
Meat eating degrades the environment.
Animal agriculture is not only cruel, but is creating a major imbalance in nature.
1 pound of meat requires 2500-6000 pounds of water. Whereas 1 pound of wheat reqs. 60 pounds of water.

To farm animals is far more expensive and wasteful than to grow vegetables. Too much of land (like the amazons, etc) are being cleared away for over/grazing of animals resulting in very high levels of soil erosion.

About 20 vegetarians can be fed off the land it takes to feed one meat eater.

If each individual implemented a vegetarian diet then that's a sure-fire way to solve allot of world crisis and feed allot of starving people.

There's a ton more that can be said for the sake of innocent animals unnecessarily killed to satisfy human demands.

Hope this helps!

Pity when they die young.

Yes, in this society, you have no rights as a human being unless you are deemed an 'adult'. Your parents have total rule over you. So, if your parents are not 'cool', or understanding, or educated, or logical, etc., you are going to have a tough time if what you want to do it against what they want you to do.

But, hey there's the old saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot force it drink." and that's about the only power kids have. Most parents out there will battle their children endlessly over some really stupid meaningless things. It is very weird, but just because people are adults, that doesn't automatically make them any smarter, wiser, or anything at all other than 'older'. You are among the lucky few.

Just think of all those kids out there who are saying, "My parent won't let me learn electric guitar or get any heavy metal music" or such stupid things. My parents were totally against me eating 'better'. See, their food was not good enough for me, see. That's what it is about. Adults are no different than little children in that they react with the same petty emotions and selfishness at times. "What all these years -- you used to love the food we made for you..." That's one typical reaction. It's all typical psychology it seems. Lucky you. Maybe you should look around in your community and school etc. and see if anyone is having these sorts of troubles and help them out. Share your experience and even get your parents involved to tell their side of the story to other parents of children/teens who want to become vegan. That would be totally cool.

if you can properly balance your diet healthily then cool but humans are meant to eat meat so your depriving ur body of needed nutrients. good luck im gunna go eat a steak:D

or my wife:W
