Do you get a vegetarian option when in prison?!

Question: I worked for a prison once, and you could ask for just vegetables, potatoes and bread in the cafeteria. I'm not sure what would happen if you were in solitary confinement. There was a kosher diet available for Muslim and Jewish inmates. The food wasn't very good and I doubt if you had vegan options. It was cooked by prisoners so there's no telling what you were getting.

A friend of mine has a vegetarian son who has schizophrenia. He was refusing to take his medication for a while and kept getting into trouble. I heard he had a hard time getting vegetarian food in jail and they said they were not obligated to provide it since it was not for religious reasons.

I believe that you are legally entitled to one.

yeah, probably baked beans

Yes, but Bubba will make sure you get your daily requirement of protein!

NO sausage ONLY! but it will be served to you many different ways... and not always when or how you want it...

That all depends on whether you will be dining in your suite or in the lovely cafeteria with Bubba. Seriously, are you planning a crime so that you can go to prison soon?

Unless, your sentence is only for a week, I would suggest you don't even mention it unless you want to get stabbed or have the cook spit in your food (which they often do anyway whether you offend them or not).
You will be served some kind of veggie but I doubt it it is pure vegetarian meaning not cooked with any kind of meat product either as ingredient or as flavoring.

Opps, guess i need to be careful what i write on the "Holiday season" cards then.

I doubt there is any legal obligation to provide veggie or vegan food.

would depend on the country and state or territory. Religious beliefs may also play a factor due to many places anti discrimination laws eg in Aus a Muslim man successfully sued for not being provided with halal meat so vegetarian due to religious may also fall into a similar category but every state or territory let alown country will be different .

and as quoted by the Police and Corrective Services Minister Judy Spence from QLD
"At the moment, Queensland Corrective Services provides diets requested on the basis of cultural or religious needs where possible."

I Hope not, prisoners shouldn't be allowed to continue their lifestyle choices in prison.
Would they offer me steak in prison because my diet consists only of steak? would they balls.

Jeffry Dolmer didn't.

I'm guessing if you are vegetarian due to animal rights, no. If its for religion, yes. So if you're planning on going to prison, pretend you're Buddhist.
