Calcium advice please?!
Two other women I know who take the same drug have recently been diagnosed with oesteopenia - less severe than oesteoporosis but still a concern. I have asked for a bone scan, but in the meantime I'm taking Oesteocare's calcium and magnesium supplements.
I'd like some advice about vegan food rich in calcium, in case I'm missing anything, and, though I don't eat or drink much junk, anything to avoid - one of the women with oeseopenia drank diet coke and was advised this is a 'bone stealer'; I assume alcohol is too - anything else?
The two women with oesteopenia are both omnivores - not suggesting cause and effect, they both eat a healthy diet - just forestalling suggestions that my vegan diet will be to blame for any bone loss
Thanks
Answers: Calcium and bone loss would be a concern for me anyway as I'm a female in my 50s. But I have been taking a prescription drug for over 3 years (need to take it for almost 2 more) that lowers the levels of female hormones and may cause bone thinning.

the address below has great vegan info on calcium and foods rich in it. as for calcium stealers... things containing a high amount of phosphorus and i believe citric acid. usually soda and carbonated beverages.. some alcohol but red wine offers more health benefits than damage..
exercise or try ensure: high calcium
I'm afraid that the only vegan food I know that is high in calcium is soy. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure that the only way the calcium content is high in soy is when it is processed into soymilk. Keep taking the calcium supplements. Sorry I can't help any further.
Broccoli and exercise
just have calories from calcium-rich foods so you can get the amount of energy to do sports
There is always Boniva.
Hey, Rice and soy milks are fortified with calcium, I get orange juice (Orchard) that is fortified with calcium, Kale, Turnip greens (I don't know what these taste like), tofu, and broccoli. I am not sure what things deplete calcium from our bodies, but you could go to webmd.com for more info about that. Hope this helps.
Oh yes, I might add that vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium in our bodies.
