Remember there aren't necessarily fixed rules about vegetarianism, and there are different types that fit better for some than others. A room full of people could all be "vegetarians", and all hold a different diet, it's what about works for you, and your reasons for becoming one.
Vegetarian - does not eat any meat, poultry, fish or animal by-products such as animal fats or gelatin.
Lacto-ovo Vegetarian - Eats both dairy products and eggs.
Lacto Vegetarian - Eats dairy products but not eggs.
Ovo Vegetarian - Eats eggs but not dairy products.
Vegan - Does not eat dairy products, eggs or any other animal product. Will also usually not use any non-food items that come from animals such as leather, wool and silk.
Fruitarian - Diet consists mainly of raw fruit.
Macrobiotic - This is mainly vegetarian but macrobiotic diets often contain seafood. All other meat products are excluded, as are eggs and dairy products. There are different levels of macrobiotic diets.
This diet is based on the Chinese principles of ying (positive) and yang (negative), and people may follow it for philosophical or spiritual reasons.
Pescetarians/Semi/Demi-Vegetarians - Generally follow a vegetarian based diet but eat fish.
Flexitarian - This is a relatively new definiti, it describes someone who still eats meat but follows a vegetarian based diet for most of the time, or who will only occasionally eat meat.
Don't eat meat. Get ready to be a social outcast and take your supplements.
The only thing I can suggest is that make sure you still get plenty of protein by eating salad, vegetables, fruits, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, raisins, all types of nuts, and also try tofu. You might like it, you might not... but it's worth trying.
Also- remember there are still a lot of things you can eat such as rice & beans, tortilla chips w/ spinach dip, trail mix, mac&cheese, grilled cheese, vegetable lasagna, veggie spring rolls, veggie casserole, baked potatoes, string bean casserole, vegeterian vegetable soup, etc
Think about it again
i became vegetarian about six months ago. i went about it by first cutting out red meats. and i got mixed input on pork, so i cut that out too. be ready for criticism, and plan ahead your meaningful speech to go into when people ask why youre a vegetarian. they take you more seriously that way. you need to eat healthier also. and take a daily multivitamin or an iron supplement. you cant just cut out meat and that be the end of it. you have to replace it with other things, or else you increase your risk of anemia. so anyway, after a few months of no red meat, cut out other meats one at a time. if i were you, id go ahead and have turkey this year since it'll be your last. check out www.peta.com for some more info. so i hope this helps! email me if you have any other questions or need advice. hottie_tiff_2003@yahoo.com =]]
Just resist the temptation to eat any meats or fish. Be observant is buying your food from now on to make sure there aren't any animal products other then eggs and dairy (gelatin is a big one) Remember the reason why you are choosing this lifestyle and be strong. Good luck
Do it gradually. It's a lot easier to cut back on meats than to go cold turkey. Especially if you do not take supplements or eat other items to balance out your nutritional needs.
Be sure you know why you want to do it. Just because someone else is doing it or just because is not a good answer. Responses I've gotten from people for why they became vegetarian included, "I don't like the texture of meat" ,"I'm doing it for environmental reasons", "It's in accordance with my religion", etc. Just be sure that the reasons why you are becoming vegetarian are right for YOU and don't let anyone pressure you either way.
Good luck!
Stop eating meat. Simple.
You're making it way more complicated than it needs to be.
