Is there anything I can do to get my local grocery stores to stock more vegetarian options?!
So, my question is, should I talk to the manager or would that be pointless?
Answers: Would it do any good to talk to the manager of large chain grocery stores? I was at the store tonight and I looked for my favorite vegetarian vegetable soup by Campbells, and the store didn't even carry it. They had that slot replaced with one of their store brand soups. I mean, come on, there were about 100 meat-based soups, and the one they choose not to stock is the only vegetarian option? Grrr. Also, I've been trying to find different varieties of dairy-free sorbet, but the only one they carry at the two largest grocery stores here is raspberry. These are big stores, too.

Usually if you put in a request for something the grocer (customer service) will order it for you. I have been thinking lately that if we all (veg*ns) made it a point to ask our favorite local grocery stores to stock certain veg*n products they just might catch on that there is a niche for these foods.
I would like to add that a grocery store that I use to go to before I moved has recently added a little section just off from produce (non perishable items like soup, etc...) that is exclusively vegetarian. I was thrilled to see this and I hope to see more and more stores adopt this trend. The store I am talking about is Dillons and they are owned by Kroger.
K is right - most big chains have little slips that you can special order things from their suppliers. It may take a week or so to get your items, but at least you'd have them. Unless a company discountinued a flavor, which is probably the case with Campbells. Remember, we're just a tiny part of the population!
I have found that my local Ralph's store is the most veg friend regular chain with a really good organic selection as well.
YOU CAN ASK THEM TO OR PROTEST
Hey, your best bet is get a cookbook.....I kind of have the same problem where I live, but with ethnic foods. Not much diversity in my neck of the woods
Do talk to the manager. They would even special order stuff knowing you'd buy it.
Jena--I thought you were vegan?
i have the same problem the only kinda soup my grocery store carries is vegtable i mean come on i dont wanna eat vegtable soup all the time i want diff kinds of soup
I would write to your manager and ask him to stock more vegetarian and vegan options. THe fact is there are loads of vegetarian options out there. IN Australia we have a health section in the aisle and in the fridge/freezer section. In these sections there are lots of canned vegetarian food and packaged food.
go to customer service and make some request.
Almost all grocery stores take product recommendations from customers. My Albertsons even has forms that you can fill out and drop in a comment box to tell them what you want them to carry. If enough people request something then they order it.
Yes, you can just ask. I think pretty much every grocery store has a slip you can fill out to suggest products that you want them to stock. There's obviously no guarantee, but if they don't they know you can go take your money to another store down the street.
You can try a signature campaign but unless you make it worth their while to stock vegetarian items, forget it. It won't make any sense for them to carry non-saleable or slow moving items. That would be like a vegetarian store selling meat.
