If I want to become vegetarian, what can I and can't I eat? Is chicken meat..?!


Question: Hi. Some people have said that vegetarians can't eat chicken and fish, This is FALSE.

People can be considered a vegetarian if they do not have red meat in their diet, but do have white! Believe me, I am a vegetarian myself and I have went to a dietitian. It depends on the type what vegetarian you want to become.
() a Lacto-ovo-vegetarian (Avoids all meats, red meats, white meats and seafood) But includes dairy food and eggs in the diet.
() A Lac to- vegetarian. Avoids all meat and eggs but includes dairy food in the diet too!
() A vegan. Avoids ALL animal products (red meat, white meat, seafood, eggs & dairy food) and includes just pant based foods.

Some vegetarians do include chicken and/or seafood in there diet. People who eat White Meat (for example. chicken) are still considered vegetarians as they don't eat Red meat (Pork, Beef ect.)

Make sure you plan your diet and have meat supplements as otherwise it can be dangerous if you have lack of Iron, Vitamin B12 and Calcium and more. Try getting Multi-vitamin tablets to help with this.

I am a Lacto-Vege and proud!! :D Also it would be best to Consult your GP (general practitioner) and dietitian to help with your vegetarian diet.This helps to stay even more healthy.

You have made a good choice! According to some studies Vegetarians have less risks of some diseases.
Some people can be critical about you being a vegetarian, but just ignore them, as your are yourself.

Vegetarians eat fruits, grains, seeds, nuts, and vegetables. Yes, chicken is meat, it comes from a once living animal.

As a vegetarian you can eat anything that does not contain meat, or slaughter by products(gelatin, etc).

You really should research it first - because you will need to eat a balanced diet and figure out how to get enough protein into that diet. No beef, chicken, pork, ham, bacon, sausage, duck, venison, etc.

vegetarians can eat anything without meat in it. of course chicken is meat. its flesh. no fish either.

Vegetarians can eat anything that is NOT made from a once-living animals. However, they can eat animal byproducts such as milk and eggs. I'm not sure of broths, soups, or sauces, apologies for that, though.

If you want to be a flexetarian vegetarian it's perfectly acceptable to eat some chicken.

Chicken is definately meat, although some people do practice a diet that refrains from only red-meat like beef.

Then there are are pescetarians, which people often consider a form of vegetarian, and they don't eat anything that came from a living animal, except fish. They will eat fish.

Than there are Lacto-Ovo Veggies which won't eat fish but will still eat animal products such as eggs and milk.

Then there are Ovo-vegetarians who will eat eggs, but no dairy products (milk/cheese etc) and no other type of meat as well.

The most strict is vegan - they don't eat anything from animals, milk, eggs, cheese, fish meat, chicken, nothing.

Duh of course chicken is meat. and so is bugs, FISH IS MEAT DUMBASSES AND UR NOT A VEGGIE IF U EAT THEM!

You should do some research and decide what type of vegetarian you want to be.

Generally you can assume that all people who call themselves "vegetarians" don't eat red meat. Beyond that it's up for grabs as to whether or not someone who identifies themselves as "vegetarian" will eat:

- poultry
- game fowl
- fish
- pork
- shellfish
- dairy products
- eggs

People whose only dietary items from the animal kingdom are dairy products and eggs sometimes call themselves "lacto-ovo vegetarians." People who do not eat anything from the animal kingdom sometimes call themselves "vegans."

Saying you want to be a vegetarian and then asking what you can and cannot eat is a bit odd. Why do you want to be a vegetarian? It's not a status symbol, it's a dietary choice. You can eat chicken and still call yourself a vegetarian. There's no National Vegetarian Association to come banging on your door and insist that you eat only the things they specify. You'll probably find some people who insist that if your dietary restrictions aren't the same as theirs, then you're not really a vegetarian. I tend to ignore people who tell me, "If you're not doing things MY way, then you're wrong." Do what is best for you.

Talk to a dietitian and work out what's best for you. Many vegetarians have horrible diets. I've known plenty whose diets consist mainly of junk food (chips, soda, candy, etc.) but they insist that they're eating a healthy diet because they're not eating meat. Never mind that they might be 120 pounds overweight, they insist they're healthy. It can be difficult to get a balanced diet without any meat in it at all, but it can be done.

A lot of people think this is gross, but never mind, I'll ask anyway:

Is what you're about to eat a piece of an animal, or did it come from a piece of an animal?

If the answer is yes, then biologically it is meat.

Culinarily speaking, mammals are meat, birds are poultry, and fish are fish.

However, eat what you want. Don't eat what you don't want. If that means that for now you just cut red meat, then just cut red meat. Take it at your own pace.

If it makes it easier for you, just ask yourself "Was this ever alive?"

If the answer is yes, then a vegetarian probably wouldn't eat it.

Vegetarians eat anything they want.

At minimum, they CHOOSE not to eat animals or parts of animals (beef, pork, chicken, turkey, fish, gelatin, lard, fat, etc.).

Some choose not to eat things that come from animals (i.e. dairy, eggs, honey, etc.)

Some don't wear things that came from animals (i.e. wool, leather, suede, silk.)

Some don't support animal testing and don't purchase products from companies that do it (i.e. proctor & gamble, johnson & johnson, etc.)

Some don't like animal products in their consumables (i.e. lanolin, milk protein, beeswax, carmine, etc.)

chicken may, or may nto be classified as meat. Thats irelavent really. Chicken is a living animal.

A vegetarian does not eat meat, fish, poultry nor slaughter by-products.

Stick with that and you can correctly call yourself veggie, if using a name is important to you.

Chickens are animals; vegetarians don't eat animals.

Some people classify poultry as different from meat; but that doesn't have anything to do with vegetarianism.

Lots of people eat chicken and call themselves vegetarian; but real vegetarians who don't eat animals would not consider those people vegetarians.

Whatever Girl is incorrect--my wife is a dietitian and the American Dietetic Association's website states:
"A vegetarian diet is defined as one that does not include meat, fish or fowl."
