Manhattan is a cocktail made with whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. Commonly used whiskeys include rye (the traditional choice), Canadian, bourbon and Tennessee. Proportions of whiskey to vermouth vary, from a very sweet 1:1 ratio to a much less sweet 4:1 ratio, but the classic mixture is 2:1. The cocktail is often stirred with ice and strained into a cocktail glass, where it is garnished with a Maraschino cherry with a stem.[1] A Manhattan is also frequently served on the rocks in an old-fashioned glass (lowball glass).

The Manhattan is one of six basic drinks listed in David A. Embury's classic The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks.

Manhattan

1 1/4 oz rye whiskey
1/2 oz sweet red vermouth
2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
maraschino cherry for garnish
Stir and pour into chilled glass

1/2 oz. to 2 oz.bourbon or real rye(not canadian) and traditionally stirred although I prefer shaken , dont forget a splash of bitters that makes the drink!

Depends on taste.
Most make it like a martini, in and out with the vermouth.
Pour a bit of the vermouth into the glass, swish it around and dump out.
Traditionally stirred like a martini.
Old recipes from the 40's,50's and 60's say 3parts whiskey to 1 part vermouth but tastes have changed.

the manhatten i was raised to mix for my dad is 2 parts canadian whiskey (dont waste the irish stuff by mixing) with 1 part sweet vermouth, followed by a dash of more whiskey, mixed in the glass by a pencil, preferably a dull one. i used this recipe while bartending, minus the pencil, and received many complements.

he has recently discovered the "perfect" manhatten, where sweet and dry vermouth are used in place of the sweet variety.
