Why is Absinthe still illegal in the US?!

Question: Almost all countries that had previously banned it has lifted the ban and is freely enjoyed. I would love to be able to buy absinthe without having to pay over $100 a bottle because of high shipping costs.

The only time I was able to get a bottle of real absinthe was a coupl of years back my parents brought me back a bottle from France. Now have have to settle for pastis.

It's not entirely banned in America. It turns out that it's thujone that is banned (that's the component of grand wormwood that was said to cause hallucinations and such--in fact, if there were bad reactions to absinthe it was usually inferior absinthes colored with chemicals that caused these side effects.) Luckily, recent tests on "pre-ban" absinthe that somehow hasn't been drunk before now has revealed that there wasn't much thujone in absinthe 100 years ago after all.

Ted Breaux, a man who did a lot of that research and has developed some lovely absinthes that are available in Europe, recently released an absinthe called Lucid in the U.S. It's based on absinthe recipes from the drink's heydey and is available in some stores listed here: http://www.drinklucid.com/get_lucid_absi...

If you don't live near one of those stores, you can buy Lucid or another legal absinthe, called Kubler (this one is white not green--but I like it better than Lucid and it's still authentic and made with grande wormwood) online here: http://www.drinkupny.com/category_s/86.h...

And finally, if you're really interested in the drink, I recommend checking out the wormwood society (www.wormwoodsociety.org) for more information about absinthe.

It's legal now, just a few weeks ago, actually. You can buy it in a store, no problem.

Because US authorities think that there is something hallucinogenic in it.

Note: QUOTE FROM EZINEARTICLES.COM
"Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, the bans are slowly being taken off. In most European countries, absinthe is completely legal once again. In the USA, there are still laws against producing it and selling it, although possessing it and drinking it are no longer crimes. For an American, that means it's ok to drink absinthe, as long as you buy it from a legal, non-American source, such as may be found on the internet."
Looks like you're paying the shipping dude.

It isn't illegal in the US anymore. The law was updated in May of 2007. You can get two brands in the US and it is also perfectly legal (for a few years now) to import the "real" stuff.

Its not banned anymore you there is a bar in New York and San Francisco that serve Absinthe.

only one kind is legal in the us....and the reason they have been illegal for so long is that when taken in large quantities can cause severe hallucinations...

Anybody knows if absinthe that Marilyn Manson produces out in the stores in U.S.? cuz you guys are saying it turned out to be legal... Thanks

just drink it and ull find out!

Whats the big deal about it?? I don't see why people care either way, can't you just drink something else?

Because people are insanely inept.

Only 40% alcoholic drinks are allowed in US.
Absinthe is 50 - 70 %
