What kind of drink is a spirit?(not the ghosts)?!

A spirit could be many different types of alcohol. Vodka and Rum are examples of spirits. Usually when you say someone is drinking a spirit, they are drinking it straight, so its not a premixed drink.

any hard (straight) liquor falls under 'spirits'. gin, vodka,scotch,bourbon,whiskey,etc.
beer and wine are not spirits
