Why is 21 years old the legal drinking age?

An adolescent may become addicted to alcohol in as little as 6 to 18 months.

Research shows that the longer you delay the onset of alcohol use with a young person, the less likely they are to experience problems with use later in life.

Youths who drink alcohol are 50 times more likely to use cocaine and 7.5 times more likely to use any illicit drug than young people that never drink alcohol.

The U.S. Surgeon General reports that life expectancy has improved in the U.S over the past 75 years for every age group except one. The death rate for 15-24 year-olds is higher today than it was 20 years ago. The leading cause of death is drunk and drugged driving.

2.6 million teenagers don’t know that a person can die from an alcohol overdose.

The adolescent’s central nervous system and brain are not fully developed and are especially sensitive to alcohol and drugs. Addiction happens much faster.

Youths who are drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to become dependent than those who wait until age 21.

because i guess they figure that at 21 years of age you`d be responsible enough to drink responsibly....YEAH, RIGHT!

I have no Idea. I am sorry for you for having to be on that side of debate.

adolescents cant control the input of alcohol as witnessed by so many deaths occurring with underage binge type drinking.
once the thrill of alcohol starts to make one feel good then one seeks to make that high better and better.until death in some cases. youth have not built up their stamina to alcohol.men will drink at military partys. but still those men make mistakes but its overlooked because they might go off to war and die tomorrow. if every person drank responsively it would be OK but sadly they try to outdo each other. dare each other to chuga lug contest and head stands over the keg and pop slaming ponys(cut a hole in bottom of inverted pony and place finger on pop top .re-invert can hole over mouth and pop top ) stupidity fueled by a buzz my friend...not kosher.

-Not everyone matures the same. Although some teenagers can drink responsibly, there's a lot who can't hold their liquor. That's why we need an established age that says, "If you can't drink responsibly until 21, then no one's drinking until 21." It may not be fair to all, but part of being an adult is playing by the rules.
-Young people tend to drink too much. Yes, older people tend to drink too much also, but by majority, it's the young crowd that gets out of control. For example, when I go to a party as an adult, only a couple people get wasted. Back in college, everyone got blissed.
-By the age of 21, most people are establishing themselves as adults and are more independant. For example, they get a job and keep it, they're not completely dependent on their parents, they start to buy nice things, they act more mature. Although their dependancy age may vary from person to person, 21 is the average when young adults establish this.

i have no idea. i started drinking at age 15-16 though

UNDERAGE DRINKING IS VERY BAD.

you destroy your liver and can end up with horrible brain damage that can make you life short by 40 years.

Mental immaturity, also, younger Young adults and children do not metabolize alcohol the same as adults.

Because over the years younger people got more stupid, more immature and just don't know how to react to the affects of drinking.there is enough DUI and people killing other people driving drunk teens are stupid drivers as is imagine adding booze to it!
