Stubbies were actually 11 oz.bottles.Shortnecks in the 70's were generally sold in stores and longnecks were sold in taverns. They were both 12 oz.bottles.The standardized longneck size makes it cheaper for breweries to buy in bulk and save money. They still have stubbies on the west coast,Session lager is an example.

gee i dont know. how many long necks can you fit in a 3sq ft fridge?

Get to the beer that much faster? idk.

May have had to do with the packing / crating of the bottles for transportation. Or, maybe a long neck chills faster than a a short neck?
