Shipping wine is illegal in many states, Maryland is one of them.
Why? It gets pretty complicated, and goes back to post-prohibition days, as well as recent supremem court decisions, big monopolies trying to protect thier status, etc.

So if you are in one of the states that make it illegal, most places don't want to risk shipping.

My styate is pretty bad too, but at least they allow some shipping, but they make it so difficult most wineries won't hassle with it.

  • I do not know of news specific to Maryland, but I have heard that some states have been cracking down on people who do not pay their taxes for alcohol or tobacco purchases online. Those taxes are not sales taxes but are consumption taxes and are allowed. The people doing the selling are supposed to collect them and then turn that money over to the state. I remember reading an article about New York or New Jersey cracking down on sites selling cigarettes for this reason. I would not be suprised to find out that Maryland is doing the same for wine.

The suppliers can lose their liscence, because the young kids are buying on line now. They get caught selling to a minor then that is their whole career down the drain.

Maybe Maryland has been put on a 'do not ship wine to' list or something. I'm really not sure, but maybe you could go back to the websites that you were on and find out their contact information and e-mail and ask them what the deal is.

Maryland must have changed their laws.

I just went to www.wine.com and punched in Maryland with no problem... Maybe the sites you are using lost their licenses to ship to Maryland?
