Why do you buy vodka at the package store??!

Question:

Why do you buy vodka at the package store??

I'm doing the Sunday crossword, and it says you buy vodka at the package store. I recently went to the post office and they had vodka in one of their 'how to properly mail' posters.

Was the post office the only place you could buy vodka in the olden daysss? Enlighten me please!

Answers:
"Package store" is a slang term for a buy-it-here drink-it-elsewhere liquor store. I think of it as meaning "in a plain brown paper bag". I live in New England; we do use the term here. (WikiPedia says that is mostly a New England term).

I have included a link explaining the historical derivation of the term.

In some states beer can be bought at a grocery store, but to buy liquor and wine you need to go to a "package store." In Virginia, for example, these stores are run by the state alcohol board. These states are typically part of the "Bible Belt." In other states you can find them all at the grocery store, at a liquor store and sometimes even gas stations.
