He was the Roman god of wine and intoxication, comparable to the Greek Dionysus. His festival, called "The Bacchanalia", was celebrated on March 16/ 17 and was to honor Dionysus. These "celebrations" were notorious for their "sexy" character (to put it nicely) and used to get so out of control that they were forbidden by the Roman Senate.
