Best red wine for $100.00 a bottle?!

Question:

Best red wine for $100.00 a bottle?

I don't know much about red wine. I would like to splurge on a bottle as a gift for a friend. I know she likes cabernet - or a good chianti.

When "settling" for a decent wine - she would drink a chianti classico (the label has a picture of a guy on a horse), a Robert Mondavi, or a splurge might be a Stag's Leap. But I'd like to splurge even a bit more than that.

Any suggestions?

Answers:
Silver Oak 2002 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Silver Oak 2002 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is an opulent wine of great depth and concentration. It displays a dark, garnet color and aromas of black plum, cassis liqueur, rose petals, nutmeg and sandalwood. The palate offers a mouth-coating texture and a wonderful progression of ?avors from berry fruit to tobacco to dark chocolate, culminating in an extraordinarily long ?nish reminiscent of a dark chocolate truffle ?lled with berry liqueur. Properly cellared, it should provide drinking pleasure until 2028. ($99.99)

Pick up an '01 Brunello.

Georges De Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is really good and stores well, if you can find a 1997 (good year).

The two Answerers before me both recommend expensive wines, and Brunello can be VERY variable.

For what it is worth, the critics of Decanter in May, 2006, and several other wine writers, have cited the best red wine for the money that has broad distribution globally to be the Concha y Toro Casteillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon. I do not know if you are referring in your question to Canadian or American or Australian or Hong Kong or Jamaican dollars, but in the USA it sells for between $US 6 and $US 10 depending on the state and store, and in Canada it sells for between $CDN 11 and $CDN 14, depending on province. That is not splurging, I know, but do you want to be seen just trying to impress by the cost, or impress by the awareness of quality and value? (Surprisingly I myself have never tried a bottle - although I intend to - but have noted the reviews and ratings).

Buy your friend some best reserve wines either from Mondavis or Chianti. I recommend too if she like italian wine, try the marcarinni barrolo 1999. You cant go wrong on this famous wine.

I'm not sure where you are located so I don't know if you will be able to get your hands on this particular wine that I am about to suggest but if you can, this is the way to go. It has actually been compared to Opus One but not as highly priced. The wine I am going to recommend is from a winery called Pillitteri Estate Winery and it is located in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario, Canada. The wine is called Family Reserve Trivalente and it is a 2002 vintage. I've included a link for you here to check the wine out. It retails for $75 Canadian so it won't come up the the $100 a bottle you were talking about but this wine is not being made again as the winemaker who signed this bottle has gone on to another project. If you can get your hands on it - BUY IT! Here's the link:

http://www.pillitteri.com/index_1.html...

Once you click on this link you will need to click on Order Wines on the left hand side and then click on the bottle under the title of VQA Family Reserves. You will find the listing for 2002 Family Reserve Trivalente almost all the way to the bottom.

You don't have to spend $100 to get a really good bottle of wine. I've drank $8 bottles-$200 bottles of wine, but the absolute BEST tasting bottle of wine I have ever had is a 2002 St. Supery Cabernet from Napa Valley.

When you go to your liquor store, talk to the people working. They are usually very knowledgable and can assist you in picking the right bottle.

Good luck!
