Eggnog Ideas?!
Answers: I'm having a Christmas party, and I want to have the type of eggnog with rum in it. Does anyone know a good "recipe"? Such as, what proportion of rum to eggnog, and should I add anything else?
We threw locally-renouned Christmas parties at our house for years and my grandmother's eggnog was always a big hit.
I'm going to assume you will buy the eggnog already made and want to know how to jazz that up. For eggnog from scratch, that's a whole lot of egg yolks and cholesterol so we just got the store bought eggnog in a carton instead.
It's hard to find sometimes but if your grocer carries eggnog ice cream, we always added a bunch of that to the mix because it kept the eggnog cool in a punch bowl without having to dilute with ice cubes. If you can't find eggnog ice cream, vanilla ice cream will suffice.
As to the liquor, that was done to taste but we also mixed rum with either bourbon, or brandy, half-n-half, but not all three.
As a finishing touch, we would buy whipping cream and whip that up fresh with an electric mixer and float that on top. You can consider adding some vanilla extract or sweetener to the whipping cream but note, this is a high caloric recipe that will already be sugary/syrupy with the ice cream and the liquor.
And of course, the finishing touch is always sprinkled nutmeg on top but we also added cinnamon too.
Hope this adds a little extra zip to your holiday beverage!

I will mention that it is a pain in the *** to make from scratch.
If you want to open a carton and add booze it is strictly a matter of taste. I would suggest 1-1.5oz. per 6oz. eggnog of a spiced rum.
About a shot of rum (more or less to taste) to a cup of egg nog. Sprinkle with a little nutmeg.
