i think it depends on what liquor you're mixing with & what you're trying to tell the difference between. Take vodka, for instance. Can you tell the difference between gordon's and barton's? No. Can you tell the difference between gordon's and grey goose? Yes! However, if i were mixing with an especially strong juice (ex. cranberry) or a lot of juice, I'd choose a middle of the line, something better than gordon's but not as expensive as grey goose. smirnoff, absolut, etc. Course, add enough mixers and it will drown out the vodka taste (in my opinion, the only unflavored vodka w/ character is the oaky belvedere)

My favorite drink is a gimlet, mostly gin with a little bit of lime juice. Due to the small quantity of lime, and its weakness, I use good gin, because I can definitely tell the difference!

Most of the time you can't tell any difference at all. If you are doing shots you might be able to taste a difference in the cheap and expensive. They have done studies, on the cheap and the not so cheap alcohols and as far as hangovers it has been proven there is not much difference, so I would save your pretty penny if I were you :)

Drinking a Jager Bomb, you can no doubt taste the difference from a Red Bull and a Rockstar. Rockstar is fine, but a true Jager Bomb taste best with Red Bull.
