What does it takes to be a server?!

Question:

What does it takes to be a server?

Right now, I am a host. Do I have to master all the alcohol drinks. Example, what on the Adios drink or Cosmopolitan martini?

Answers:
No you will not have to know how to make the drinks, the bar tender will do that, but you will have to know what kind of ingredients are in each drink. But what is more important is that you have to be able to do many things at one time. Like as you are taking drink orders you have to know the other table needs there salads, and yet another table needs more napkins and so on. Being able to do all of these things at once is key to running 4-6 tables at one time. Plus you have to put up with so much crap from some people, who are just trying to get something for nothing, or they are just all around a-holes. The money is pretty good as far as tips, on a good day i used to pull down 150-225 dollars a night in tips. So know the menu and all the specials on it. good luck

3 years as a server, plus my mom has been a manger for over 25 years.

Can you ask your boss or coworkers, they might know better than anyone, and they might be happy to communicate with you inorder to promote you? You just need to teach yourself some recipes , about 100 or 200, get yourself a book on recipes, or ask the other workers to train you.

To be a server you need good people skills, patience, good balance, and a great personality, and the opportunity!!!! Just take your time at first and enjoy yourself!! It also helps if you have some knowledge of some drinks and the menu!!! To make recommendations. Also you need to be attentive to your customers! Serve them the way you would like to be served at a restaurant!!! Have fun!!!

its simple don't worry about much ask the cook and the bartender for some help they are usually happy to help, and keep up the good work don't stop going to school not even if your planning on owning a bar or a restaurant.

good luck I started as a porter went to bar-back, bartender, assist. manager and ended up as a club GM now I'm partner of that same club and own my private bar-tending co. too
