What is the best whiskey and sake?!

Question:

What is the best whiskey and sake?

I'm not looking for a $100 dollar bottle, something more around $30-40, but still kick ***, and something has quality please.

Answers:
Here in the South, we treasure our Kentucky whiskey. Any brand made along the Ohio River are delicious. Don't waste your time on the majority of Tennessee whiskey - it is just not the same.

That being said, I prefer good "midrange" brands like Maker's Mark, Jim Beam or Jack Daniel's. If you find smaller labels like Rebel Yell or Old Granddad, grab them - they are also good and made on a much smaller scale, which means better quality control.

Sake is made both domestic (USA) and imported. Obviously, the imported will set you back a bit. Good top domestic brands include Geikkikan and Benihana (which is used in their restaurants, obviously).

A decent price imported bottle of sake will run you about $40-$50, but check the label - some are meant to be drunk traditionally (heated in a flask), and other meant to be drunk ice cold. Don't even try to heat some cold-method sakes; they will taste flat and flavorless. I like the brands Ozeki and Ichiban from Japan; here in Houston, they run about $25-$35 a bottle.

Enjoy!

the best whiskey is Crown Royal.

Crown Royal
Jack Daniels is pretty hard on the pipes.

Which whiskey is the best is very much a matter of taste. In my opinion, Canadian wiskeys tend to be smoother, sometimes sweeter wiskeys than American bourbon whiskeys. (Not that I am knocking American bourbon! I happen to be a big fan of Jack Daniel's.) Black Velvet is a mellow variety that tends to be quite affordable. If you can find the Black Velvet Reserve, it's a really nice and still affordable whiskey. If you want to spend a little more, Crown Royal is pretty tastey too; almost has a bit of a vanilla to it, but it tends to run about double the cost of Black Velvet.

If you really don't know what you like, why not buy some of the smaller bottles and do a home tasting? You can usually get pints (sometimes smaller) of all the major brands, and then you can decide on the best for yourself.
