My experience is that most people know they are drunk, but don't think others know they're drunk.
They know that they've been drinking but they don't usually realize how much it effects them. They may think that they are slightly impaired when they are significantly impaired.
Some people know and don't care. Some people know and are paranoid about it. Others don't know and don't care.
Usually, I don't care about it. If I'm going to drink to the point of being drunk.... well, it's because it's fun. Otherwise.... why bother?
Some people drink alot - meaning alot at one time AND often. These people may not realise they are impaired until they are very drunk - and they may not act very different. Young people who are not used to drinking much sometimes will act very different when drunk vs. normal.

Most people do know that they are drunk. They think that nobody can tell that they are drunk. However, it really depends on the person. Maybe your father had no idea, it really depends on the person.
Most people know it but there are a few who do not: "I'm not drunk, as they fall over the couch, come on give me my keys, I can drive, as they drop the drink they are holding".
