I grew up in an alcoholic family.....and there are so many signs and symptoms to look for it would drive one crazy. Most of the other people that answered were right, it's not about the amount.

It's very much about the dependency level. But someone who is an alcoholic doesn't have to drink every day. There are binge alcoholics that only do it like once a month
There's weekend alcoholics that never touch it through the week
Then there's the ones that do drink every day all day just to function.

Which ever one that your friend is seeming to fall under, they need support. Most aren't going to admit it, and the more you push and hound the worst it gets, so just be there. Offer to talk when they are sober if they want to but don't harp on it all the time. If they do get to the point where they can admit it, then offer to go to AA meetings with them. Alot of times people are in such denile that they really don't even realize it themselves.
Another way for you to get more information is a group called Al-anon. check them out online.

It's not about the amount consumed.

It's about dependency. When you need it. That's when you're an alcoholic.

Regular consumption at a particular time makes one alcoholic.

Junipero not have answer for you . . . Junipero drink bottle of tequila everyday for last 4-5 years and not alcoholic yet . . . will let you know if that happens . . . thanks for asking.

This is like one of those "How do you know if you need to take a shower?" questions.

If you have to ask, your already there.

It is partially the amount, but an alcoholic can't get through a day without drinking. It's like cigarettes. It's an addiction.

is this a hypothetical or are you setting new goals?

they tell you that more then 4 drinks in a session is binge drinking, and doing that more then 4 times a year you can be an alcoholic... thats BS... to be an alcoholic i think you need to be at the point where you need a drink to go to sleep at night and when you need a drink when you get out of bed so you can start your day
