What is the best malt whisky?!
What is the best malt whisky?
I have been a fan of good scotch for some time but have never had the opportunity to try anything better than supermarket Glenfiddich as I don't live in a very scotch-orientated region.
I want to broaden my tastes and get some really good stuff that is a bit more prestigious than Glen'F, any ideas?
I have c.£50-80 to spend.
Thanks!

Well for that amount of money I would suggest buying two or three different malts, trying them and seing which is to your "palate".
Also when buying these buy malts from different regions - Highland; Lowland; Speyside; Islay and Islands are your choices, with Glenfiddich being Speyside.
I would suggest the following - Highland Park (from Orkney - an island malt). The 12y.o. retails @ £25. speyside I would go for a lesser known one in Glendronach, again about £25. My particualr favourite comes from Islay and is Ardbeg, again go for the standard 10y.o @ £25 - £28.
If you feel that you want to try examples of all of them, there is the "Classic Malt" range from Diageo and they are-
Cragganmore (Speyside); Oban (Western Highland); Lagavulin (Islay); Glenkinchie (Lowland); Talisker (Island - from Skye) and finally, Dalwhinnie - Highland.
It may sound a drag but when you are tasting them remember the tastes and flavours you like and invest in a whisky book. A chap called Michael Jackson - definitely not the singer, and when you see his picture you will see what I mean, and you will find examples of the types of whisky you like.
For £80 if you are going to blow it on one bottle, go for the 30 y.o. Glenfarclas (Speyside), absolute heaven.

Used to work with Malts and Wines
try GlenMorangie...single malt - my dad loves it. it wont cost that much though...maybe £20-£25 quid...i think.
NONE it's disgusting!
Seriously though, go for the real thing - Irish Whiskey. Bushmills do some expensive stuff.
glen morange is a good 1 better when aged, and quite a few other whiskeys starting with glen.but as with everything it`s up to your own palette.your`s may differ from other people so best try lots.SLANGE.
Go to www.thewhiskyshop.com I recommend Tobermory from the Isle of Mull.
There are numerous ones to choose. I like Highland Park which is a very light coloured whisky with a particular peaty taste...
I always find Talisker or Obran go down quite well. Single Scottish malts. Around £20 - £ 30 max a bottle. I think some of it is down to the individuals taste. There are plenty of single malts from the Scottish highlands and islands in this area, all seem pretty good !!
I think Ive asked this before.
My favourite is Cutty Sark
Its scrumptious and goes down like water.
sadly you cant get it here in England very easily, the bloomin Scots keep it for themselves
Have a look on the Scottish Malt Whisky Society website. There is a membership fee,but all their whiskies are cask strength.(unadulterated-some,w... over 100` proof.) and start at £35ish last time I looked.
Talisker or Glenmorangie, especially if you can get one over 15 years (with that amount, it shouldnt be a problem)
I went to the Talisker distillery on the Isle of Skye and few years ago, and you could smell the whisky for about 3 miles along the road . Mmmmmmmmmmm!!!
Edradour - the smallest distillery in Scotland (Pitlochrie) makes the very best - the 10 year old (£25 a bottle) is extremely smooth and the unfiltered (£50 + a bottle) is exceptional
JURA is one of my favourites.
Got to be Glenlivet, as old as you can afford.
macallans it might no be spelt quite like that.that is what i was told by locals in lossiemouth in scotland in the skerry brea. i tried it ,very nice.
If you are interested in whiskeys from around the world, I would HIGHLY recommend George T Stagg bourbon. It's a single malt, barrel proof bourbon from Kentucky. I have never had 140 proof go down so smoothly.
For scotch, I would try Dalmore. I've really enjoyed it in the past.
I'm highly fond of Islay whiskies. Ardbeg, Bruichladdich, Caol Ila, Lagavulin and Laphroaig. All can be found for under £50
talisker, crangganmore, macallan, balvenie, bunnahabhain, tobermory and bruichladdich.
