drinking alcahol is not good for you and people shouldn't do it.
It is addictive. It makes you gain weight fast, cause it is pure sugar, and used by the body going directly to weight gain.
it makes you stupid, you do things you normally wouldn't do.
people kill people when they are drunk. it blurs your judgement, it makes you weak.
Some will argue that you need it to have a good time, But I wanna be able to remember the good times I have, without waking up with a headache.
some will say that reasearch indicates it helps your heart somehow, but it ruins your liver, and you can get the same heart bennifits, by drinking grape juice without having to become stupid to do it.

It's fun to feel like queen of the world, like you can do no wrong no matter what you say, there's no hesitation and you do instead of thinking over and being unsure and doubtful.

But mostly it's for fun and recreation. If you do it outside social circumstances, watch out!

I like drinking wine because it goes so well with food. Ever had a Shiraz with a steak? Or a nice Pinot Blanc with a good piece of fish? So delicious!
Then after dinner I like a nice Cognac with a good cigar.
I was so poor for so long and now that I am not I guess you would say I am enjoying the good life these days.
1-2 glasses of wine and 1 Cognac is always good with me. I like the getting a very small buzz and I do NOT like the feeling of getting real drunk.
In a nut shell for flavor, enjoyment with friends and for a SLIGHT buzz. Also, gaining knowledge of food, wine and various liquors is a fun hobby.
I prefer quality of quantity.

You will find two major sides in this discussion.
Those that drink to get drunk. They will generally be the college and younger crowd, who will drink whatever they can afford, with no real interest in quality. Cheap American lagers and bottom shelf booze used just to get tipsy, or in the case of underage, rebel against society/family/whatever. No regard for quality or craftsmanship, they can normally be spotted in a crowd by the "whatever is cheap or free" comment.
Those that drink for the flavor. Homebrewers, and beer/wine snobs. In the case of homebrewers, we have an appreciation for the time and work that goes into a good beer or wine. We know how it is made, what is used to make it, and what the different styles of beer and wine are. Beer & wine snobs fall into this category as well because they have an appreciation learned over years of careful study, research, and side by side comparisons of numerous brands and styles. These people can be picked out of a crowd by their requests for beer that others may have never even heard of before.
Some medical studies have found that a moderate amount of alcohol is good for you. Wine has antioxidants, good for heart etc... But we all know that isn't why people drink alcohol. Most people are a bit self consious in social settings and a drink or two keeps party goers from feeling like Charlie Brown. Also, people use it as a release, to blow off stem from a hard day or when they celebrate something like an accomplishment. Some people drink with the intent of getting wasted, that is where drinking games and shots come in.
