Is Absinthe all that people say it is?!

Question:

Is Absinthe all that people say it is?

I have had a small glass, it was really strong but I didn't have enough to get that "drunken clarity" people talk about. I hear it makes you feel different than getting drunk. My brother wants me to buy him some but there are no retailers in the states, you have to buy it overseas from France or another European nation.

Yeah i had it 2 years ago in Spain and it was pretty pricey and very strong but I had less than a cup. All of the guys there were going bananas over it.

In a word, no, it's not what all the hype claims it to be.

However, everybody has their own take on it. Some of the "effects" may just be what people think it should be and it's a little bit of placebo effect.

Either way, it's a specialty drink that won't appeal much to anybody who doesn't like anise or black liquorice...that's its major flavor. You can order it via a number of sites on the internet, and usually it's shipped without trouble.

Just bear in mind that it is high in alcohol (55%+) and is not meant to be drunk straight or shot.

Lots of good stuff on absinthe (how to drink it, myths, etc.) here:

believe me absinthe is very strong...80percent alcohol!!!very strong and gets u drunk very quickly!!!u obviously didnt have enough...try having few shots of it then u'll know of how strong it is!!!ya u can only get it in spain or france!!!

I was just in prague and the absinth there was 70% alcohol, which is very srong. I don't know that it felt different than being drunk but I also drank other alcohol not just the absinth. You can purchase absinth in Canada. There are also a few ways to drink it which may affect the feeling experianced. You can mix it with water or soda water and ice. It can also be served hot with sugar melted into it. I had it cold.

there are sevral online places to import it from, most lower end absinthe's you will find are just a high alcohol percentage but the better stuff also contains wormwood/thujone wich induces a different feeling than straight booze, generally the more wormwood, the more you will pay also keep in mind different country's absinthe's can vary drastically in flavor

Does it have reputed psychedilic properties? No, not that I've ever had. I've had maybe 20 different kinds. No psychedelics in the manner that acid and mushrooms induce.

But it is potent, nasty tasting liquor. You will catch a hard buzz quickly.

It's not all it's cracked up to be, in my opinion. I like to enjoy the taste and aroma of liquor. Beer, wine, scotch, brandy, cognac -- those are much better. If I'm looking to get wild, I'm going for a good tequila.

As far as I've seen, different types of alcohol affect people in different ways.

The whole 'drunk clarity' thing was true for me at least. Colors become a bit more vibrant and lighting effects become more interesting, but it won't make you go wild unless you just generally lose your senses with alcohol.

I find it gives me a pleasant buzz, akin to sake or something else, as opposed to wine or beer. (To each her own though.)

Now then, there are a wide variety, going up to 80% is the highest I've seen down to 30%, which I believe is on par with some varieties of vodka. You can find some varieties in the United States, but they are 'absente' and sans the wormwood. The actual varieties of herbs varies, as I've had some with the straight up wormwood mixture and others that have the essence of black berries or other things.

As for methods, there is the French method which involves the slow drip of water and provides a nice louche or the Czech method which involves lighting the sugar on fire and caramelizing it. I prefer the later myself.

Also, a good site to order from is: http://www.alandia.de/.

Shipping is guaranteed, but a bit pricey. I like the Strong 68 myself, but eh.

Absinthe is kinda blown outta porportion

i found this article called Absinthe: What you should know

its pretty dead on, it also tells where and how to get the best quality stuff and not get ripped off, as well as the laws regarding it. If your thinking about buying some i suggest reading it
