Allergic to wheat! What is a beer drinker to do?!?!

Question: Just found out I am allergic to gluten. Now what? Should I stay in the US where most beer is terrible and I won't miss it or return to the UK where there is amazing beers, ales, etc. .. especially in Belgium....What is a poor girl to do?

I'm single!

ONE MORE EDIT: Of course, you can drink any clear distilled alcohol (bourbon, whisk(e)y, vodka, rum). Even if the booze is made with gluten grains, there is no gluten in the distilled product. And you can have cider.

You wouldn't have any better luck finding gluten-free beer in Europe than here. No gluten means no wheat, rye, oats or barley.

You're not out of luck though. There are a couple GF beers available in the U.S. Anheuser-Busch makes "Redbridge," which is a sorghum-based brew. It's red-brown in color and considerably hoppy.

Other brands are Bard's and New Grist. They are both U.S. brands, but I don't know about distribution. You will have to do some legwork in stores around your area.

P.S. I'm sorry to report that there is no pill to take to treat a true gluten sensitivity. It is an autoimmune response altogether different from histamine-type allergies for which one takes meds. Also, the consequences of not following a GF diet are truly grave. If you have a true gluten based illness, you must avoid all gluten to prevent consequences such as malnutrition, infertility, chronic embarrassing and incapacitating GI problems, immune suppression, and an increased likelihood of GI cancers.

Also, inquire in this excellent GF forum: http://forums.delphiforums.com/celiac/st...

stop drinking beer.

Kirin Brewers from Japan makes a beer made with rice instead of wheat.

Take an allergy pill when you drink, that's what I do,

I also take one when I eat large amounts of pasta.

It works for me.

I'm not sure about the open market, but I know in homebrewing, there are several gluten free recipes. You could look around at some local breweries to see if they offer the style.
Otherwise, start homebrewing!

edit: LOL sorry, not married but taken... of course, if you ever take up homebrewing, feel free to email me, I'd be more than happy to help with any questions you have, or I can hook you up with one of my cider recipes...
