Why does Johnny Walker Blue cost so damn much?!
Answers: I asked last week in a bar I went to and they said it was $35.00 a shot for this and even with a hooked up special price from a bartender I know, it would be $20.00 a shot.
It is a premium blend of their top aged whiskeys. Some dating back years... possible decades.
PS. It is Johnnie.
From wiki:
Johnnie Walker's premium blend. Every bottle is serial numbered and sold in a silk-lined box, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. There is no age declaration for Blue Label. 86 proof.
You should try the green lable in stead. Out of all of the Johnnie Walkers this is the best price-quality of them.
I agree. While Blue is a very good blended whiskey, I prefer Gold label (about $60 - 65) - or even Green Label ($55 - 60).
Try :
The Mac Allan 12 ($60) - or - 18 ($120)
The Glenlivet 12 ($35) - or - 18 ($65)
I think the taste characteristics to be similar (superior) to Johnnie Walker, of course, everyone has a different palette.
I have all of these currently, among many others, (the Blue was a gift) and I find myself reaching for the 12 YO Mac Allan - again, different tastes.
You, like a bunch of others, have fallen prey to the marketing mystique of the brand. Its one of those ego things, the cachet of drinking a very expensive whisky, which I can assure you is extremely profitable for the company. Is it that good? Humbug! Do as suggested, blind taste tests, let your senses do the judging. I can get 6 bottles of JW Black for that price! No my friend, its a suckers drink, same holds true for a lot of the ultra high priced single batch malts and bourbons. Wines, champagnes and some of the brandies are truly worth their high price tag. Why? They don't advertise.
